Umar Khalid denied bail – Swara Bhasker and Faye DSouza are dismayed, but a Kashmiri Muslims says ‘justice system is finally working’

Delhi court rejected the bail of Umar Khalid who has been jailed for his role in the anti-Hindu Delhi riots. “There are reasonable grounds for believing that the accusation against the accused is prima facie true”, the court observed. Several contentions of Khalid’s counsel were rejected by the court including one regarding him not being present on the spot. “In this regard, in a case of a conspiracy, the court observed that it is not necessary that every accused should be present at the spot”, the court noted.

Not surprisingly, the court decision didn’t go down well with the secular-liberal cabal that began shedding copious tears as the news trickled in. While Bollywood entertainer Swara Bhasker and ‘journalist’ Faye D’souza couldn’t contain their sadness, Khalid Baig aptly pointed out that Bhasker was favouring a supporter of terrorists.

Baig in his reply to Bhasker highlighted that Khalid is a supporter of those who conducted the ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Hindus and added for good measure that the denial of bail indicated the justice system was finally working. This is the difference between a Hindu-hating secular-liberal and a rational person who can look at issues on the basis of facts and not from the prism of religion.

Umar Khalid comes from a very religious Muslim family. His father is Dr SQR Ilyas, a prominent man in Islamist circles of Bharat. Dr. Ilyas is a prominent member of Jamaat-e-Islam-Hind. The body was founded by Abul A’la Maududi in 1941 with the objective to make Bharat an Islamic state. After the partition, which Maududi opposed as it would have negatively impacted Islam’s growth in Bharat, Jamaat-e-Islami-Hind declared that it is separate from its Pakistan branch.

The Bharatiya branch claims that it is separate from its foreign branches. However, the evidence appears to show that Jamaat-e-Islami is the subcontinental equivalent of the Muslim Brotherhood, the pan Islamist party in the Arab world. According to its constitution and policy mentioned on its website, it seeks to establish “Iqamat-e- Deen” in Bharat. In simple words, it seeks to establish Islamic rule in Bharat and convert all others to the Islamic religion.

Jamaat-e-Islami takes the face of innocently-named organisations to disguise its true motives. The student wing of Jamaat was previously known as the Students Islamic Movement of India or SIMI. Dr. SQR Ilyas was the national president of SIMI in 1980s.

Currently, Dr Ilyas is the president of the Welfare party of India. The party is another front of Jamaat e Islami and was established in 2011 after SIMI was banned. Ilyas had announced the formation of the party in his capacity as the convener of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

Dr Ilyas is also a member of the Executive Committee of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and also Babri Masjid Action Committee. In fact, he was the one who filed a review petition against the verdict in the Ram Janmabhumi Temple case. The Outlook quotes a police officer in one of its reports saying, “The father-son duo has questionable credentials without a doubt. They are under the eye of intelligence agencies and their activities are under scanner”.

It should be mentioned here that the Kashmir branch of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has been proscribed by the government for being a supporter of separatism and for being in contact with terrorists.

There is little reason to believe that Umar Khalid was not influenced by the activities of his father despite his claims of being a Communist and by inference an atheist. However, his latent Islamism has been on display on numerous occasions.

In JNU, he was a member of the Democratic Students Union that had protested the hanging of Afzal Guru and Yakub Memon. Besides his participation in raising the “Bharat tere tukde honge” slogan, his role in the anti-Hindu Delhi riots came forth and he was reported to have been in touch with AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, the mastermind, in addition to another key conspirator Khalid Saifi.

It seems that Comrade Umar Khalid is not some “useful idiot”, but a very shrewd operator. He seems to be the worthy successor of many illustrious Islamists before him, who had mastered the art of adroitly wearing the “communist hat” when it suited their ’cause’. The cause is mentioned on the website of Jamaat-e-Islami. No wonder, he is a darling of the urban naxal cabal – they simply love anyone who is a Hindudveshi (Hindu hater/Hindumisic).

While members of the cabal who support a terrorist sympathiser and an anti-national rioter only because he belongs to the ‘minority’ community are hailed as ‘intellectuals’, voices of rational Muslims like Khalid Baig, who had earlier spoken against S Varadarajan’s denial of the Godhra massacre, hardly find space.
