16th–17th century Shivling discovered in Vidisha, MP

A significant discovery has reignited the long-standing debate on Bharat’s lost and desecrated temple heritage. In a stunning revelation, a centuries-old Shivling, estimated to date back to the 16th–17th century, was unearthed during excavation near a mosque in Udaipur town, Ganj Basoda tehsil, in Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh.

As per Naidunia, the discovery occurred near the Chaukhandi Masjid, where construction was being carried out on land later confirmed to be government-owned. During digging for the private construction, workers stumbled upon a 3-foot-tall Shivling, buried beneath layers of earth. Soon after, local villagers alerted the authorities. Officials from the Archaeology Department, including Deputy Tehsildar Anurag Rawat, reached the site and supervised the retrieval of the ancient Hindu relic.

This finding is not an isolated case. Locals have reported that in previous years, a Ganesha vigraha and a Nandi statue were also found during similar digging activities in the same region, all pointing towards the likely presence of an ancient Shiva temple complex that had been destroyed or buried, possibly during periods of Islamic conquest and rule.

A suppressed history? the Gyanvapi-Kashi parallel

The unearthing of a Shivling in such proximity to a mosque is reminiscent of the Gyanvapi case in Varanasi, where a Shivling was found within the premises of a mosque believed to have been built over the demolished Kashi Vishwanath Temple by Aurangzeb. Similarly, thousands of temples across Bharat were razed or repurposed during centuries of Islamic rule. According to historical records and accounts from sources such as the ASI, Epigraphica Indica, and even foreign travelers, over 40,000 temples are believed to have been desecrated or replaced by Islamic structures across Bharat, with many destroyed in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

What makes this case even more concerning is that the construction activity was being conducted on government land without clear authorization. The administration is now investigating the matter. Officials have stated that if the locals are willing to take responsibility for the newly unearthed Shivling, it may be preserved at the current location to allow for worship and restoration of cultural continuity. Otherwise, it will be moved to a storage room at the ancient Pisanhari Temple complex in Udaipur. Local resident Rajesh Nath has strongly demanded that the Shivling be left at its original site so that the villagers can resume worship.

The unanswered questions of Bharat’s buried temple heritage

Why is it that time and again, sacred Hindu relics, Shivling, murthis of Ganesha, Nandi, and temple foundations are discovered right next to or beneath mosques? Is this merely a coincidence or a glaring sign of a systematic erasure of Hindu temples during the centuries of Islamic rule in Bharat? We cannot deny the fact that, in the past, there was large-scale Islamic rule marked by aggression and persecution against Hindus, which resulted in the destruction and desecration of many Hindu temples. The unearthing of a 16th–17th century Shivling near a mosque in Vidisha is not an isolated incident; it is a painful echo of countless similar cases from Gyanvapi in Varanasi to Bhojshala in Dhar. These discoveries raise urgent questions: Was there a temple here that was destroyed to make way for a mosque? Are we uncovering just another layer in the long-suppressed truth of temple destruction and cultural appropriation masked as history?

The pattern of such findings suggests a larger truth: if comprehensive excavations were carried out at all mosque sites built during medieval Islamic rule, many more buried Hindu temples could come to light. This possibility, however, remains inconvenient for political leaders driven by Islamic appeasement and those who refuse to acknowledge historical realities.
