The Rotorua community experienced a spiritual and cultural milestone with the inaugural Bhajan and Kirtan Sammelan, hosted by the Hindu Elders Foundation Rotorua. Held at the Hindu Heritage Centre on Friday, 6 December 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the event showcased a beautiful evening of traditional devotional music, creating opportunities for deeper community connections.
This soulful gathering transcended cultural boundaries, presenting a harmonious blend of bhajans (devotional songs) and kirtans (sacred chants). Featuring talented local artists, the event celebrated the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Bharat (India) while fostering unity and inclusion within Rotorua’s diverse community.

Dr Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, praised the artists and their performances, saying, “We were amazed and delighted to witness the abundance of talent in Rotorua. The heartfelt singing of the artists infused the evening with profound spiritual energy, leaving everyone uplifted and inspired.” He also expressed gratitude for the audience’s enthusiastic participation, adding, “Their willingness to join the chorus created a sense of shared joy and devotion, making the event a resounding success.”
Shri Vijay Chand, President of the Hindu Elders Foundation Rotorua, welcomed the gathering and thanked the artists for their contributions. He shared his vision for the event, stating, “This Sammelan is more than a musical evening—it is a celebration of devotion, spirituality, and unity. It brings us together as one large family, connected through the sacred threads of music, Dharma, and love for the Almighty.”
The event drew attention from beyond Rotorua, with performers from Auckland, Tauranga, and Wellington expressing interest in future Sammelans. “We envision this becoming an annual tradition, growing stronger with each year,” added Shri Chand, emphasising the event’s potential for fostering community bonds and nurturing talent.
The performers, categorized into three age groups—students (6–17 years), youth (18–35 years), and seniors (36+ years)—showcased a diverse range of musical talent. Prizes were awarded to Jennika Siya Kumar, Ms. Vidya Vasudevan, and Ms. Sandhya Pawan for their performance in their respective categories. The overall prize went to Rajneel Deo and the Rotorua Satsang Boys, who captivated the audience with their devotional renditions.
The event was open to all, regardless of religious or cultural background, exemplifying inclusivity and community spirit. “The Hindu Elders Foundation represents not just senior citizens but custodians of wisdom, experience, and knowledge,” noted Shri Chand. The Foundation’s programs aim to engage the community through gardening initiatives, visits to local attractions, and collaborations with government agencies and NGOs, ensuring that Hindu Elders remain active and valued contributors to society.
With its blend of music, devotion, and unity, the first-ever Bhajan and Kirtan Sammelan has set a strong foundation for future events, promising to be an enduring tradition in Rotorua’s cultural calendar.
