Rotorua to host its first Bhajan and Kirtan Sammelan

The Rotorua community will soon witness a unique celebration of spiritual music with the first-ever Bhajan and Kirtan Sammelan. This highly anticipated event, hosted by the Hindu Elders Foundation Rotorua in collaboration with the Hindu Heritage Centre Rotorua, will take place on Friday, 6 December 2024, at the Hindu Heritage Centre, 225 Malfroy Road, Rotorua, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

This soulful evening promises to transcend cultural boundaries, offering a harmonious blend of traditional devotional music. Featuring talented artists, the sammelan will showcase bhajans (devotional songs) and kirtans (sacred chants) that highlight the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Bharat (India).

“We are excited to host the first-ever Bhajan and Kirtan Sammelan in Rotorua,” said Vijay Chand, President of the Hindu Elders Foundation Rotorua. “This event provides a platform for local artists to share music that touches the soul, fostering peace, community spirit, and a sense of universal fellowship.”

We have planned to categorise the performers in 3 age groups: student (6 – 17 years); youth (18 – 35 years) and senior (36+ years). The idea is to bring out the talents from all age groups.

The sammelan will present a variety of musical performances, from classical and traditional bhajans to modern interpretations, giving attendees a full spectrum of devotional music. Attendees will experience songs honouring various Hindu deities and expressing universal themes of love, compassion, and gratitude. The event is designed to create an immersive, peaceful atmosphere where individuals can connect with others and deepen their own spiritual reflections.

Talented artists from Rotorua, Tauranga, and Hamilton are already confirmed, and additional individuals or groups interested in participating are invited to contact the organisers at [email protected] or register through https://tinyurl.com/BhajanKirtanSammelan2024 .

Alongside the music, the evening will also include short talks on the significance of bhajans and kirtans in Hindu culture, adding a deeper understanding of these devotional practices.

Event Details:

The event is open to all, irrespective of religious or cultural background, and is expected to draw audiences from across Rotorua and surrounding areas. Complimentary refreshments will be provided, offering attendees an opportunity to connect, reflect, and celebrate the music together.
