“Years ago, there was a commemoration of the abolition of slave trade by the British in 1807 when William Grenville passed the Slave Trade Act. Of course, it would take more than a century before slavery was completely eradicated across the globe as a recognised commercial endeavour.
The Christian Church which had immensely benefitted from slave trade quickly sensed the shift in the winds and over time, slowly whitewashed its role as slave traders par excellence. In some accounts, the Church also portrayed itself a liberator of slaves! A classic example of this perfidy is the 2006 Hollywood film, Amazing Grace, named after the famous Christian hymn bearing the same title.
The other facet of this perfidy is how the Christian missionary apparatus uses this narrative to claim that the Hindu Varnashrama Dharma is a form of slavery, a narrative that has received a booster dose in recent years. This essay strips this Church propaganda bare and offers several useful pointers on how Hindus can deal with it…..”
