Hindu family harassed by Islamists in Thrissur, Kerala

A Janam TV report on a Hindu family in Kerala’s Thrissur being harassed by Muslim community members surfaced on social media platform X a few days ago. The 1.5-minute video shows the Hindu family literally in tears when narrating how the Islamists were troubling them. The Hindu family runs a small food stall in Thrissur, and they say they have been harassed for quite some time.

The family, which operates a small food stall in Thrissur, alleges they have been facing continuous harassment. The head of the family, in the video, Prashant, emphasises that they do not hold all Muslim brothers responsible, expressing a need for coexistence among different castes and religions. He says, “We are a Hindu family. We are Krishna devotees. We don’t blame all the Muslim brothers. We need caste and religion. But the people who bring Salik are the Islamists. We have all kinds of people who come to our restaurant, people of all religions. But they don’t allow us to do that here since we go to the temple and pray, and they come to harass us many times. We faced many religious threats.”

The primary accusation is directed towards a group identified as Islamists, who, according to the family, have been targeting them for their religious practices. Despite welcoming customers of all religions to their restaurant, the family claims that harassment ensues, mainly because they visit the temple and engage in Hindu traditions.

Amidst the reported religious threats, the situation escalated when two individuals, Salik and another person, allegedly came to the family’s shop and issued death threats. The video shows a man dressed in a black shirt and white dhoti making these threats.

The family, identified as Prashanth and Priya, narrates their distressing experiences. Priya explains how they have been subjected to verbal abuse, expletives, and even threats to harm their 7-year-old daughter. According to her, the alleged perpetrators are part of a Muslim group who, at one point, threatened to break their daughter’s leg.

Despite multiple attempts to seek help from the police, the family claims no action has been taken. Frustrated and seeking justice, they express their desire to lead a peaceful life in their birthplace, emphasising their plea for intervention and resolution in the face of rising tensions.

Such instances of Hindu persecution have been a common occurrence in countries like Pakistan where Hindus are a minority. However, to see this happen in “God’s own Country” Kerala is becoming a normal with the population of so-called minorities increasing by the day. If this is the state of Hindus today, it is a matter of concern if this is replicated across the country. Will we remain a Hindurashtra? Are Hindus safe anymore?
