A 6th-class male student was brutally beaten by his tuition teacher in Kerala. The incident took place in Kollam on Monday evening. The parents filed a complaint against Riyas, a teacher at Pattathanam Academy Tuition Centre. S Rajeev, the boy’s father, said that he was beaten up, alleging his son did not complete his homework.
One day, the boy did not go for tuition. The teacher had told me to complete the homework before attending the next class. The tuition teacher gave the 12-year-old sixth grader an ‘imposition’ for not completing his homework. When asked about this, the boy who first said that he had written later said he had not.
There is also a complaint that the teacher beat him again and again after he refused to cry despite being hit. Rajeev said that the boy came home after tuition looking tired, and his eyes were red. Initially, the young victim did not inform his parents about the incident. The minor was unable to sit or lie down and told his sister about the beating. The daughter saw the beating marks. This was when they took him to the hospital.
Riyas claimed he beat the victim for ‘lying.’ The child was physically assaulted more than fifteen times. Rajeevan said that it was not just a beating but a cruel assault. Similar incidents of atrocities against children have been reported from madrassas in the past.
When the teacher was called after the incident, he replied that teachers usually whip the students. When Rajeev contacted Riyas, he was asked to come to the office if he had anything to say. Rajeev said that his son is not even able to go to the washroom.
The 12-year-old boy from Pattathanam was admitted to the district hospital with injuries all over his body. His parents have complained to the police. The hospital authorities and the child’s mother approached Child Line authorities regarding the incident.
ChildLine workers informed that the victim has beating marks all over his body. Kollam East Police registered a case under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act against the teacher based on the ChildLine report. It is reported that Riyas is absconding. A march was conducted to the tuition center under the leadership of various student organizations.
Minister of Women and Child Development Department Veena George and Minister of Public Education and Labor Department V Sivankutty claimed they spoke to high-level officials. They asked authorities to give an urgent report on the incident of Riyas’s high-handedness.
