A controversy erupted in Assam’s Goalpara district after a Class 9 Muslim student brought beef biryani to school and attempted to persuade two Hindu classmates to consume it. The incident, which occurred at a government higher secondary school in Krishnai town, triggered outrage among parents and local residents, leading to police action and administrative intervention.
As per ETV Bharat reports, according to police, the student’s mother, Noor Sahida Begum, allegedly prepared the food brought to the school. Based on complaints lodged by the families of the Hindu students, authorities registered a case and arrested the woman, while the minor boy was produced before a juvenile court.
Beef brought to school; FIR registered
The case was initiated after the parents of two Hindu students approached the Krishnai Police Station alleging that their children were pressured to eat beef by a group of Muslim students during the lunch break. Police stated that the student who brought the tiffin was accompanied by four other Muslim classmates, who were also questioned as part of the investigation.
Authorities booked the accused under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges relating to criminal conspiracy, wrongful restraint, deliberate acts intended to outrage religious sentiments, and offenses committed by a group acting together.
Conflicting versions emerge
While police proceeded with legal action, relatives of some of the students denied allegations of coercion. The father of one of the students questioned by police claimed that the beef biryani was being shared among Muslim friends when two Hindu students approached and asked about the food.
According to this version, only rice was allegedly offered, and no attempt was made to force anyone to consume beef. However, the complainant families maintained that the incident deeply offended their religious sentiments and warranted strict action.
Tensions rise in communally sensitive district
The issue quickly spread beyond the school campus and drew attention from local organizations, heightening tensions in the communally sensitive district. Senior district officials, including the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, visited the school to assess the situation and prevent any deterioration in law and order.
School authorities reportedly attempted to address the matter internally at first, but the dispute escalated after details reached the students’ families and local community groups.
School considers action against students
The School Management Development Committee (SMDC) has been deliberating disciplinary measures against the five students allegedly involved in the incident. A final decision regarding their continuation in the school is expected after consultations among school authorities and district officials.
At the same time, some local leaders and student representatives urged restraint, arguing that disciplinary proceedings should not deprive students of their education and that efforts should instead focus on restoring communal harmony.
Goalpara schools ban non-vegetarian tiffins
In the aftermath of the controversy, the inspector of schools for the Goalpara district issued a directive prohibiting students from bringing non-vegetarian food items to school. Under the new order, only vegetarian food will be permitted inside school premises, although eggs may still be included in students’ tiffins.
The directive also bars students from leaving school campuses during lunch breaks and warns that violations will invite strict action. The decision follows Assam’s broader restrictions on public consumption of beef and reflects concerns among authorities about preventing similar disputes in educational institutions.
The incident has reignited debate over religious sensitivities, student conduct, parental responsibility, and the role of educational institutions in managing culturally sensitive issues. While the police investigation continues and courts examine the allegations, the controversy has become a focal point in wider discussions on communal relations and maintaining harmony in Assam’s diverse society.
The incident also raised serious questions about how beef allegedly found its way into a school despite Assam’s restrictions on its public consumption. In December 2024, the Assam government expanded existing regulations by prohibiting the consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants, social functions, and public gatherings across the state. Given these restrictions and the sensitivity surrounding the issue, the controversy prompted concerns among local residents and parents regarding compliance with state laws and regulations. The alleged presence of beef inside a government school, particularly in a district with a history of communal sensitivities, further intensified public outrage and led authorities to take swift action while investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
