Woman gang-raped in Delhi, media hides name of key accused auto-rickshaw driver

A 27-year-old woman, who took an auto-rickshaw, was allegedly taken elsewhere and gang-raped by four men near the ITO area of the national capital, and one accused has been arrested, police said on Monday.

In her complaint, the woman, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, stated that she boarded the vehicle from northeast Delhi’s Khajuri Khas area for Kashmere Gate on Saturday.

However mid-way, she was taken to an isolated room where she was raped by the auto-rickshaw driver and three others and then dropped at the Kashmere Gate. Sources said that doctors have medically examined the victim.

Police, meanwhile, have arrested the auto-rickshaw driver who has confessed to his crime. The police have registered an FIR against the 4 accused people including the auto-rickshaw driver at the IP Estate police station.

Searches are going on to nab the other three accused.

It is noteworthy that two news agencies – IANS and PTI – have both chosen not to reveal the identity of the prime accused auto-rickshaw driver. We spoke to IP Estate Police Station in Delhi, who redirected us to Kamla Market Police Station. After speaking to two more police officials, one of them reluctantly divulged that the arrested auto-rickshaw driver’s name is Salman and identity of other 3 accused is not known.

A similar crime, although much more barbaric, had occurred recently in Pune too. Auto-rickshaw driver Mashaq Abdulmajid Kanyal abducted a 14-year-old Hindu girl, raped her and then invited 10 of his friends to gang-rape the girl for the next 2 days while the child was kept naked and starving in different spots across Pune. Finally, when they went to drop her at the railway station, two railway employees also raped the girl.
