Fresh tensions have erupted in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal after unidentified miscreants allegedly vandalized the Murti of Goddess Kali in the Chunakhali Shyambazar area under the jurisdiction of Murshidabad Police.
According to local sources, the incident came to light when residents discovered that the Murti had been desecrated during the night of 16th of March, 2026. The act has sparked outrage among the local Hindu community, who described it as a direct attack on their religious sentiments and cultural identity.
In response, a large number of residents gathered and staged a road blockade, demanding immediate action against those responsible. The protest disrupted normal movement in the area and drew significant attention from authorities.
Police forces soon arrived at the scene and moved to disperse the demonstrators, restoring traffic flow. However, the situation took a more contentious turn as several locals alleged that the police attempted to remove the damaged Murti and pressured the Puja Committee to proceed with immersion, a move that further inflamed tensions.
Members of the community have strongly objected to this alleged action, insisting that the Murti should remain as evidence until a proper investigation is conducted. Protesters have demanded the swift identification and arrest of the culprits, along with assurances that such incidents will not recur.
The episode has raised serious concerns over law and order as well as communal harmony in the region. Residents fear that repeated instances of religious desecration could deepen mistrust and destabilize the fragile social balance.
Authorities have yet to issue a detailed public statement regarding the allegations, but sources indicate that an investigation is underway.
As emotions continue to run high, all eyes remain on the administration’s next steps to ensure justice and restore confidence among the affected community.
