Did Nashik police cover up an attack on Hindu traders by Uddhav faction leader Mushir Sayyed?

LRO (Legal Right Observatory) alleged that the Nashik police are attempting to save Uddhav faction corporator Mushir Sayyed. The organization has sought Deputy CM Fadnavis’ intervention in the case where Sayyed’s gang allegedly stabbed three Hindu traders.

In its July 7 tweet, the indigenous legal rights organization alleged that Rahul Raut, Kaushalya Vakaharkar, and Vinod Thorat were stabbed by members of Sayyed’s gang. The tweet further highlighted that the Nashik police took no action despite the victims repeatedly urging the police to do so. LRO sought the intervention of the CM, Deputy CM, and Maharashtra DGP in the matter.

The Nashik police, however, dismissed the issue as ‘fake’. “It’s fake information. A small dispute among shop owners and workers. No one stabbed. Minor injury to 3. No communal issue. Appeal to all not to spread and believe rumours”, their reply to LRO said.

LRO subsequently provided video evidence that debunked the Nashik police’s claim. The video footage dated July 4 shows men in skullcaps attacking some people who have been identified as traders.

Despite LRO providing further evidence, the authorities are yet to take action in the case. The disdain with which the authorities are treating the case despite video evidence is appalling, to say the least. Maharashtra DGP must step in and order an investigation because it is not just a matter of law and order but also one of the safety of citizens.

The casual manner in which the Nashik police dismissed the entire issue raises some serious questions. Are they trying to shield someone? Shouldn’t the lives of ordinary citizens be the topmost priority of the police? It has been more than a week since LRO tweeted about the incident hence both higher authorities and the state government needs to take cognizance of the matter and bring the accused to justice.
