Kozhikode couple attacked for watching The Kerala Story?

Five accused of beating up a young Hindu man in Kozhikode who questioned them for harassing his wife were detained by Kerala police on Monday. One two-wheeler they were traveling in was also confiscated.

Ashwin, a native of Cheruvannur, was beaten up by the accused. Janam TV reported that the incident occurred around 10 pm on Sunday when Ashwin and his wife returned home after watching The Kerala Story movie at a theater in the city. Meanwhile, a five-member group followed the couple in two two-wheelers. They sang obscene songs to the lady and winked at her.

When they stopped at a traffic signal, Ashwin questioned this. With this, Muhammad Ajmal, a native of Naduvattam, got off his scooter and brutally assaulted Ashwin. The young Hindu couple was attacked in Kozhikode City by a group of Islamists without provocation. The attack took place right in the middle of Kozhikode city. Were they attacked for watching The Kerala Story?

The attack by total strangers stunned the couple. It is also suspected that the assailants were drunk. Ashwin said it is impossible to go out with the family in Kozhikode.

Ashwin stated that immediately the passerby filed a complaint with the police control room along with the number of the vehicle, but help did not arrive. The couple then approached the city traffic police. They were asked to go to the Nadakkavu police station with their complaint!

Is this how Kerala police plan to tackle atrocities against women? Should the police dilly-dally about their jurisdiction limits, or should they get out and detain the criminals? Many questions about Kerala police remain, and social media exploded, criticizing the police. But are they the only ones to blame?

The couple went to the Nadakkavu police station and filed a written complaint with the vehicle number. However, it is alleged that the police did not take any action. Instead, they asked Ashwin to come back later!

Media like Janam TV picked up the story, and the news soon spread like wildfire. Public anger followed, which jolted Kerala police into action. Senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), intervened as the incident became controversial.

Meanwhile, Ashwin and his wife went to Kozhikode Medical College to get themselves treated. Then the police reached the medical college and recorded the statement of Ashwin and his wife. They checked CCTV footage of the place and zeroed in on the culprits. After this, the police took the accused into custody.

On Monday, the complainant identified the accused. The police detained five people in the case. Incidentally, Ashwin stated that Ajmal was the one who beat him up, and there was no complaint against others. There are accusations that someone tried hard to save the criminals.

By Monday afternoon, reporters claimed the accused would be produced before the court after Ajmal’s medical examination. By evening, Nadakkavu police granted Ajmal station bail, and he went home. His body language at the police station showed that someone was pulling the strings somewhere.

Naduvattom and Cheruvannur are near the infamous Marad fishing village, about 10 km south of Kozhikode city. A gruesome killing of Hindus happened at Marad in Kozhikode district on 2 May 2003. The Hindu genocide led to a Hindu exodus, the wounds of which are yet to heal.

Around ninety Islamists went on a rampage armed with swords, knives, and country-made bombs stowed in a local mosque. Eight Hindus and a Muslim were killed that day. The Islamist who was killed died after sustaining injuries from his co-assailants. 16 Hindus, including two women, were seriously injured that night.

The area comes under the Beypore assembly constituency. Beypore is currently represented by P A Mohammed Riyas, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s son-in-law. Though Vijayan handles the Home Department, it is well known that Riyas is running the show.

Currently, the Beypore constituency is the epicenter of ‘green communism.’ Riyas’s father, P M Abdul Khader IAS, was the Kozhikode commissioner of police from April 2000 to June 2001. Back then, the buildup of arms and explosives inside the mosque did not happen overnight.

There are accusations that the communist regime is trying hard to topple the case against the Elathur train arson suspect Shahrukh Saifi. Elathur, too, is just 10 km north of Kozhikode City. Vast quantities of narcotic drugs are being seized from the city every day.

Though several media reporters converged on Nadakkavu police station after Ashwin’s news went viral, none published photos of Ajmal or his gang members. The police, too, were seen handling him with kid’s gloves. Is something fresh brewing?
