Hyderabad, Telangana: Islamists attack Hindus for playing songs to celebrate Holi near mosque; Hindu orgs register protest

Tensions arose in Hyderabad in Chengicherla near Ghatkesar when Islamists started attacking Hindus for playing bhakti/religious songs while performing Holika Dahan on 24 March to celebrate Holi. The celebrations were happening near a mosque.

Siasat Daily reported that the Islamists claimed that the music disrupted their religious observance, Islamists confronted the Hindus, demanding that they cease playing the songs temporarily.

The Islamist mob of 500 attacked Hindu families who were celebrating Holi, injuring many including a pregnant lady who has been admitted to a City’s Major Hospital.

The police, upon arriving at the scene, revealed that the dispute arose when some individuals installed speakers for the Holi celebrations while the Namaz (Islamic prayer) was being conducted in the vicinity. The request to lower the volume led to heated arguments, culminating in a violent altercation.

As of now, no formal complaint has been lodged with the authorities, and no legal action has been initiated. The police have confirmed that no case has been registered thus far, despite the skirmish resulting in injuries.

On Monday, Hindu organizations organized a rally to protest against what they claim was an attack on local residents who were observing Holi celebrations in Chengicherla, Hyderabad, on the previous night of March 24. Tensions reportedly arose after the Holi celebrants played songs outside a mosque during prayer time.

Approximately 200 members of Hindu groups gathered in Chengicherla on Monday with the intention of marching towards the location where the clash occurred on Sunday.

However, the police had set up barricades on the road and intervened by resorting to a lathi-charge to prevent the protestors from reaching the site. Despite their efforts to advance, the demonstrators encountered a strong police presence, including female officers, deployed in the village to maintain order and prevent any further escalation of the situation.

The protestors voiced their grievances through slogans and attempted to push forward, but faced resistance from law enforcement personnel.

It is noteworthy that just recently, a Hindu shop owner named Mukesh was attacked on Sunday (17th March) by a group of Islamist youth for playing Hanuman Chalisa and other Hindu devotional songs in his shop, which is located near a mosque during the ‘Azaan’ time. The incident took place on Jumma Masjid Road in the Siddanna Galli area.
