With schools and colleges reopening in West Bengal and students gearing up for their new sessions, preying eyes of grooming (love) jihadis have started to follow Hindu school and college-going girls.
With the pandemic threat subsiding and physical classes reopening, these sexual predators have started tracking the teenage girls headed for schools or coaching centres. Two such recent cases have surfaced online.
As per a Bengali newspaper cutting shared by a Twitter user, three grooming jihadis were nabbed by the state police when they were lurking around the Polerhat High school in the Kashipur Thana area in South 24 Parganas district. The three men have been identified as Rohit Molla, Mahfuz Molla and Rafikul Ali.
Columnist and author Monidipa Bose Dey added that she has also witnessed similar scenes near her residence. She further shared that these predators target young girls by opening tyre-repair, welding and furniture shops within the proximity of schools.
In another incident, four youth were arrested by the Kolkata police on Sunday, February 20, for harassing two minor girls and attempting to abduct one of them by dragging her inside their car. The incident took place in Rajarhat, near the girls’ home at Sikharpur located on the road to Vedic Village. The victim was only 13-year-old.
Police said that both the girls were students of class VIII and were cycling back home after getting some study notes photocopied. The stretch of the road was pretty empty and sensing an opportunity the four accused came in their SUV, blocked their way and started to harass the girls verbally. When one of the girls protested, one of the men alighted from the vehicle and tried to pull her inside the car. The girls screamed out, hearing which farmers working in a nearby field rushed to their aid. The men reportedly fled leaving their victim behind but the girls had noted down the registration number of the white vehicle.
The next day, they approached the police and lodged a complaint. The Rajarhat police initiated an investigation and arrested all the four namely Saifuddin Molla, Salauddin Molla, Arup Mondal and Masudur Islam on Monday. Mondal is a resident of Haroa in North 24 Parganas while the other three stay in Kashipur in South 24 Parganas. All of the accused have been booked under the POCSO Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with molestation and kidnapping. They were presented before the magistrate at the Barasat court and were sent to police custody on Tuesday.
Police have stated that the SUV used for the attempted abduction was registered in Mondal’s mother’s name. “Mondal and his friends were driving around the road that connects Bagu and Bajetaraf village when they spotted the two girls,” shared a Bidhannagar Commissionerate officer.
