Bangladesh: Ruling Awami League’s volunteer wing leader attempts to rape Hindu housewife

Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak (volunteer) League leader Mizanur Rahman was caught by the locals in Kaliganj Upazila (sub-district) under Jhenaidah district of southwestern Bangladesh while trying to rape a woman from the Hindu community, Bengali language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh Daily Jugantor has reported.

The report says the local Hindus caught him half-naked and tied him to a tree. After learning this, police went to the spot, rescued him and took him to the police station. The victim filed a case at Kaliganj Police Station in this regard, and Rahman has been arrested for now.

The accused is the son of Moksed Ali of Alaipur village, and the former president of Sundarpur-Durgapur Union Volunteer League.

Locals told The Daily Jugantor that even before this incident, the accused used to come to the Hindu-dominated village and harassed the Hindu families. That night, Mizanur Rahman went to the house of Amaresh Das around 11:30 pm when Amaresh was sleeping with his wife and children.

Rahman entered into the room and removed the blanket covering Amaresh’s wife and tried to rape her. When a startled Amaresh woke up and opposed him, Rahman started beating the Hindu man. Hearing the commotion, villagers came running and hold of the half-naked Rahman and tied him to a tree with a rope.

In September last year (2021), the villagers had filed a written complaint with the District Magistrate of Jhenaidah against the same Mizanur Rahman for harassing the Hindu community in a Hindu-dominated village of the upazila. In view of that complaint, when the news was published in various media, various human rights organizations had taken note. After that, the committee of Kaliganj Upazila Volunteer League was declared dissolved due to the activities of Union Volunteer League President Mizanur Rahman. But the undeterred Mizanur Rahman continued his criminal behavior.

Amaresh Das demanded justice for his wife and exemplary punishment for the accused, who he alleged had harassed them earlier too. Kaliganj police station Officer-in-charge Abdur Rahim Molla said to The Daily Jugantor that a case has been filed against Mizanur Rahman in this regard.

HinduPost Note

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to gradually cleanse the religious minority from the country. While the Opposition BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami combine is openly hostile to Hindus, the situation is only marginally better under PM Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian Awami League regime. As per a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, there will be no Hindus left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks using false blasphemy charges, hate speech, rape/forced conversion of women are some of the tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.
