Andhra: Pastor rapes ST woman and ropes in ‘ruling party leader’ to threaten her

In Andhra Pradesh a married woman has filed a complaint against a pastor who raped her and threatened her with the help of a ‘ruling party’ leader. He offered money to the victim in return for withdrawing the complaint against him. As per media reports the victim is not backing down and wants to bring the pastor to justice.

The pastor works at a church in Mudivarthi Palem in Indukurpet, Nellore district. He allegedly had his eyes on the married woman for a long time and approached her when she came alone to church one day. He asked for her help with something in his house and forced her to accompany him. Despite her efforts to escape he raped her there and threatened her to not reveal it to anyone.

However, the woman told about her ordeal to her husband and with her family’s support filed a complaint against the pastor. He went to the local leader of the ‘ruling party’ for help. The politician reportedly told the woman that the pastor is ready to pay Rs 40,000 as compensation and asked her to accept it and withdraw the complaint. The woman refused to back down and was threatened by the politician as well.

Media reports suggest that the victim belongs to a Scheduled Tribe. She has alleged that even the police are asking her to compromise with the pastor and withdraw the complaint. Recently the case of a temple priest murdering a woman with whom he had an extramarital affair went viral and hateful comments were made about the Brahmin community and Hindus. But the news of the pastor raping a ‘dalit’ woman was not even reported by English media much less attracted the attention it needs. The usual suspects, liberals, feminists, social justice warriors and the assorted lot, are also inconspicuously silent.
