Casteist allegations against BAPS Akshardham in America were false & coerced

baps

BAPS in America was charged with human trafficking and the use of forced labour on its construction site in America in May 2021. It has now emerged (archived tweet) that these allegations were false and coerced.

PGS artisans withdraw allegations

Rajasthan’s Sirohi-based Pathar Ghadai Sangh (PGS) released a statement on July 13 claiming its artisans were coerced to make false allegations against BAPS. PGS is affiliated with Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS). Its statement says the labourers made the allegations under duress. They further alleged that advocate Swati Sawant misled the artisan volunteers and they were afraid to tell the truth as Sawant threatened to initiate police action and get the volunteers imprisoned.

The release was signed by Prabhuram Meena who is the general secretary of PGS. It states that 12 of the volunteers were pressured to join as plaintiffs. “Some of these artisan volunteers have now contacted advocate Aaditya SB Soni and informed him that an advocate in the US named Swati Sawant misled them into making the complaint and they now want to withdraw from it”, the release said.

“These artisans have been rendering their services for such BAPS temples, in India and in the US, for many years. In all this time, they have never experienced any pressure, casteism or discrimination at BAPS temples… These artisans have clarified that they were treated with love at the BAPS Swaminarayan temple where they served, and were well taken care of”, the release further noted.

“A dozen of these plaintiffs decided to withdraw their complaint and to remove their names from the case and asked Aaditya Soni for his help to inform the American courts and attorneys. The artisans have now withdrawn from the case and have voluntarily withdrawn their claims in court. Though their previous attorneys were informed three weeks ago, they are yet to submit this withdrawal to the court. Notarized affidavits, videotaped interviews, and statements in the presence of advocates support these claims.”, says the statement.

HAF’s Suhag Shukla wrote a detailed thread (archived tweet) explaining the witchhunt against BAPS. She says BAPS is being targeted not only because it is the largest Hindu temple but also due to its Gujarati roots. The aim is to bring up the ‘Modi’ factor wherever they can. “Modi is often used as a cudgel & excuse to target Hindu Americans”, she says.

BAPS raided by FBI

In May 2021, a group of Indian workers in the US filed a lawsuit alleging human trafficking and forced labour and claimed they were confined and forced to work for as low as USD 1 on the construction of the Swaminarayan temple in New Jersey’s Robbinsville. Following this, the temple was raided by the FBI.

“Worship through seva is an integral part of Bhakti in the sect and volunteers from around the world contribute for the same. The volunteers who take part in such construction activities of the temple regularly interact with people who come to visit. They are also regularly in touch with their family members back home. Many artisans went back home while some chose to stay back and perform seva at other temples in the US”, BAPS said in a statement.

The statement further says that the artisans came to America on an R-1 visa approved for 20 years by the federal government. The statement also said that federal, state and local government agencies have regularly inspected and approved all of the mandir construction projects on which the artisans volunteered. BAPS added that they maintain adequate security to ensure the safety of worshippers, visitors and volunteers at all their temples. BAPS officially denied all allegations and stands vindicated today.

How a DMK Minister frustrated Vikram Sarabhai’s plans for a rocket launch pad in Tamil Nadu

“How a DMK Minister frustrated Vikram Sarabhai’s plans for a rocket launch pad in Tamil Nadu”, Swarajyamag, August 14, 2019:

“There is hardly anyone in the nation now who hasn’t heard of Sriharikota. For this barrier island was what had the entire country glued to its screens as ISRO’s second moon mission, Chandrayaan 2 was launched from India’s only launch site Satish Dhawan Space Centre located here.

But this could very well have been Tamil Nadu’s pride if only the co-founder of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) K A Mathiazhagan hadn’t damaged its prospects.

As Nambi Narayan narrates in his book Ready To Fire: How India and I Survived the ISRO Spy Case, the DMK leader’s behaviour and demands is what cost Tamil Nadu a golden opportunity to host India’s only rocket launch pad. Here is an excerpt……”

Why Bharat’s success shames the history of the West

0

“Head-on | Why India’s success shames the history of the West”, First Post, July 10, 2023:

“India was not supposed to be a success story. China, yes. Western think tanks knew as far back as the 1990s that the Communist giant would, as one recent book (The World in 2050: How to Think About the Future) by Hamish McRae put it, claim its rightful place in the world.

But India? It was a colony. It was not meant for greatness. It was poor, chaotic and unmanageable. How on earth is a country, where millions still live in poverty, suddenly going to be the third largest economy in the world by 2027?

The Western elite didn’t believe India had it in her to succeed. After all, the West had lifted itself out of relative poverty in the 1500s and into great wealth by the 1900s through colonial conquest, transatlantic slavery, and the occupation of two continents, the Americas and Australia…..”

“Teesta Setalvad and the Case for Judicial Reforms in India”, News 18, July 14, 2023:

“On September 30, 1962, US President John F Kennedy sent 3,000 federal troops to protect the lone black man, James Meredith, to study in the all-white University of Mississippi where the racist Governor of the Mississippi state, Ross Barnett, himself stood with his Marshals blocking the entrance of Meredith to the university campus.

Such was the determination of JFK to protect the right of one black man that he risked his next presidential bid, which resulted in a violent clash with racist Southern whites, leaving two dead, 160 soldiers injured and 28 US Marshals wounded. Meredith was guarded 24 hours a day by reserve US Marshals and Army troops for him to be educated as any other white citizen. This is an oft-quoted example of the state using its might to protect the right of one individual, the testimony of a strong democracy.

When Teesta Setalvad was rejected bail by the Gujarat High Court on July 1, her lawyers reached out to the Supreme Court. Within hours of the Gujarat HC judgement, the SC constituted a two-judge panel, which could not come to a decision and referred the matter to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud who urgently constituted another three-judge panel the same night. This three-judge panel deliberated and granted her interim bail for eight days so that she can apply for bail in the Supreme Court…..”

Two groups of different religions came face to face following a social media post on Islam in Raichur district of Karnataka on Monday.

The police rushed to the spot and were trying to rein in the situation.

According to police, a group of Muslims had tried to barge into a Hindu temple. The police prevented the group and arrested four persons, who were identified as Akbar, Shameed, Tajuddin and Samir. The police also slapped cases on 30 persons in connection with the incident.

Police said that the incident took place near the Bangali camp in Sindhanur taluk in Raichur district after an alleged controversial post on Islam came to the fore from the social media account of a young woman. As the post went viral on social media the group of Muslims questioned the Hindus living in the area.

This had led to a verbal altercation and the Muslim youths allegedly attacked the localities. After coming to know about the development more than 60 youths came from Sindhanuru town to the village and attacked another group with weapons.

Meanwhile, the photos of a policeman dragging a Muslim youth from the Durga Devi Hindu temple by holding his hair have surfaced. The Muslim youth was creating a ruckus by sleeping inside the temple after barging into the premises of the temple at the time of confrontation. The local villagers objected to it and police dragged him out by holding his hair to control the situation.

The tension continues in the region and the police have initiated strict measures.

MP: Indore’s Church leaders are upset with police probing conversions

0
Indore Police Commissioner Makarand Deoskar & Indore Diocese Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal
Indore Police Commissioner Makarand Deoskar & Indore Diocese Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal

A recent news from Indore, MP about Indore Police mistakenly sending a notice and questionnaire about conversion activity to several Christian organizations, highlights the trifecta which ails our Republic.

1. Incompetence of Indian state

2. Brazen entitlement of Churches and other Abrahamic ‘minority’ groups

3. Crookedness of Indian English-language media

Let’s examine these issues one by one.

1. The Indore Police Commissioner Makarand Deoskar said that an internal notice & questionnaire was sent to all police stations in the city to probe the activities of Churches and Christian organizations in their respective area, as part of an effort to address law & order issues arising from illegal religious conversion cases.

The questionnaire comprised 16 points and sought details on objective of organizations’ activities, whether they are suspicious or agitational, and if they are involved in religious conversion. It sought details of all activities by missionaries in the last three months and asked if the missionaries are running any NGO and if they get any financial aid from foreign countries. Police stations were also asked to gather bank account details.

What did the SHOs of the police stations do? They just blindly forwarded the notice and questionnaire to 300 office-bearers of churches and Christian orgs.

‘Why not just ask those accused of breaking the law, whether they broke it or not…who needs investigations, and all that tiresome work?,’ the defenders of the law must have thought. Don’t be surprised if you soon hear news about police sending questionnaires to suspected terrorists as well!

2. How did the Church and local Bishop react? With faux outrage and by taking the moral high ground, with Indore Diocese Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal stating “This is a discriminatory order..why only Christians?”. The lack of self-awareness, or should we say the self-righteousness of Abrahamic religious groups, likes Churches and mosques-Jamaats, is breathtaking. They are ones who are on a mission to ‘save souls’, ‘cleanse this heathen country’, establish ‘God’s kingdom on Earth’…and because not a day passes by when bigoted missionaries spewing hate against Dharma are not caught in some part of the country or other, but call them out on it, and all you get is angry deflection and denial.

Bishop Thottumarickal, here are a few sample cases of hateful Christian missionary activity around Indore from recent years:

https://opindia.com/2023/03/christian-missionary-arrested-for-attempting-forceful-conversions-of-villagers-near-indore/…

https://hindupost.in/dharma-religion/woman-alleges-forced-christian-conversion-bid/…

https://hindupost.in/politics/71-tribal-children-rescued-mp-en-route-bible-camp-missionaries-claim-persecution/…

In recent times, NCPCR raids on Christian residential schools and so-called shelter homes in MP have thrown up some shocking revelations of child abuse & religious indoctrination. But even being answerable to the law of the land seems like an affront to this Bishop, because of his innate religious supremacism and sense of entitlement in a ‘pagan’ country.

3. Indore Police is in the ‘eye of a storm’ reported the Times of India breathlessly. But Madhya Pradesh’s Churches and Christian orgs are never in the ‘eye of a storm’ for such deracinated, West-worshipping media outlets, despite repeated revelations of predatory proselytization among poor, underprivileged Hindus, including janjatis!

Police withdraws notice, Christian leaders threaten to go to court

The notices have been withdrawn by Indore Police after opposition by Christian community leaders.

“We have not issued the notice to the community members. The letter has been written by ACPs, addressed to the TIs. It is an internal letter. The TIs may have mistakenly sent it to some Christian missionaries. It is related to our routine tasks and doesn’t target any community. There are law-and-order problems related to religious conversions that often happen, so these details are being collected and processed to timely address communal problems,” said Indore Police Commissioner Deoskar. “The community should not have any problem with this if they deny any conversion activities vehemently,” he added.

But not being satisfied (as any Hindu organization would) with the police clarification & retreat, Christian organisations are preparing to take the cops to court. “We contacted the police commissioner and told him that it is an unjust order and very discriminatory. Why only Christians? The questions in the letter are also very suspicious. This is not in good spirit,” said Indore Diocese Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal, who is also the head of United Christian Forum.

Suresh Carlton of the United Christian Forum said that there were “objectionable” questions in the notices. “There is one that asks the person to declare if he or his organisation is involved in religious conversion. This act of the police is a violation of our constitutional rights,” he said. “None of us is involved in such activities and we will go to the high court,” Carlton said, adding that there are 60,000 Christians in Indore and a large number of them are associated with ‘social welfare activities’.

Don’t be surprised if you see this ‘news’ getting covered in New York Times or BBC, or some obscure American city council of European Union flunky raising the ‘persecutions of minorities in Modi’s India’ over it.
