“Iran 1953: When Britain plotted with Islamists to overthrow democracy”, Declassifieduk, August 1, 2023:

“In many accounts the CIA is regarded as the prime mover behind the 1953 coup in Iran, yet Britain was in fact the initial instigator and provided considerable resources to the plot, which UK planners named ‘Operation Boot’.

In the early 1950s, the Anglo–Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), or BP as it is now known, was run from London and owned jointly by the British government and private citizens. It controlled Iran’s main source of income, oil, and by 1951 had become, according to one British official, “in effect an imperium in imperio [an empire within an empire] in Persia”.

Iranian nationalists objected to the fact that the AIOC’s revenues from oil were greater than the Iranian government’s…..”

Panipat comes alive with Hariyali Teej amid turnout of 50K women

0

Haryana’s Panipat city came alive in vibrant hues on Saturday as the grand celebration of Hariyali Teej took centre stage amid the turnout of 50,000 women at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur-Huda ground.

The gathering entered its name in the Limca Book of Records, adding a feather in the cap of state’s cultural heritage.

With a surge of enthusiasm, women and young children alike donned traditional Haryanvi attire, infusing the festival with a deep sense of cultural pride.

The Teej festival, renowned for its symbolic representation of unbroken prosperity, saw Panipat transformed into a canvas of Haryanvi culture, with culinary delights, exquisite clothing, and a palpable collective identity taking the forefront.

Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar felicitated 101 women from diverse fields.

Their indelible contributions and remarkable achievements were acknowledged in a gesture that underscored the significance of their presence in shaping a progressive society, he said.

The Hariyali Teej celebration in Panipat stands not only as a record-setting achievement but as a testament to the unity and cultural richness.

The city resonated with the fervour of tradition and the spirit of progress, making this year’s celebration an unforgettable spectacle.

Speaking on the occasion, Khattar expressed pride in being part of the Hariyali Teej festivities.

He highlighted the festival’s sanctity as a cherished occasion for women, daughters, and sisters, emphasising its deep-rooted cultural value.

The Chief Minister mentioned a symbolic gesture of a ‘Sudama’ bringing ‘Kothli’ (traditional gift), urging the women to accept it as a token of his blessings.

He highlighted the tradition where brothers pledge to ensure their sisters’ happiness and prosperity through this traditional ‘Kothli’.

The Chief Minister pledged to work for the happiness and prosperity of all women.

He also emphasised the pivotal role of women — mothers, sisters, and daughters — in making festivals whole, expressing his resolute commitment to their wellbeing and peace.

In a significant gesture marking the occasion of Teej, the Chief Minister made three key announcements aimed at uplifting women.

For empowering women through economic avenues and financial aid, the Chief Minister announced setting up of 50 to 100 Pota Cabins at district headquarters.

These cabins will operate as Sanjha Bazar, exclusively featuring products meticulously crafted by self-help groups.

In another announcement, he said under the umbrella of the Mukhyamantri Vivah Shagun Yojana and similar schemes, the government currently extends financial aid of Rs 31,000.

“Today, I announce to increase this amount to Rs 41,000 to alleviate the financial load during significant life events such as weddings,” said Khattar.

“To boost education for daughters in the state, the government and private polytechnic colleges with underutilised infrastructure will be upgraded into women degree colleges based on the demands and requirements received from such colleges. This move aims to enhance educational opportunities and optimise existing resources,” announced the Chief Minister.

During an event, Khattar highlighted the significant progress made in Haryana by shedding its past image of being associated with female feticide.

“Why New York Times cries ‘majoritarianism’ as Hindus remain ‘second-class citizens’ in India”, First Post, August 16, 2023:

“The New York Times is at it again. A week before India celebrated its 77th Independence Day, it came up with another alarmist article, titled “India Is On The Brink” (9 August 2023). The latest provocation was the violence in Manipur.

The article, written by Debasish Roy Chowdhury, a Hong Kong-based Indian author, is deeply problematic and propagandist. It says that the “fuse for the current unrest in Manipur was lit by the politics of Hindu supremacy, xenophobia and religious polarisation championed by his (Modi’s) Bharatiya Janata Party.” It’s ironical to see a Hong Kong-based author criticising democracy in India!

It continues, “In Manipur, Christians are bearing the brunt as the state’s BJP government stokes the insecurities of the majority ethnic Meitei, who are predominantly Hindu. State leaders have branded the Kuki who populate the hill districts and who are mostly Christian as infiltrators from Myanmar, blamed them for poppy cultivation intended for the drug trade and evicted some of them from their forest habitats….”

‘Organised loot by one family in Kerala’: Cong MLA slams CM Vijayan

0

In a scathing attack on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Congress legislator Mathew Kuzhalnaden on Saturday said “what is happening in the state is an organised loot by one family”.

He targetted Vijayan’s daughter Veena Vijayan’s IT company based in Bengaluru – Exalogic, saying this company has not just collected money from a Kochi-based mining firm, CMRL, but others as well.

“What has surfaced is only the tip of the iceberg, there are many others also. This is an organised loot by one family,” Kuzhalnaden said.

Veena Vijayan found herself in trouble when a news report mentioned last week that CMRL had paid her and Exalogic a sum of Rs 1.72 crore during 2017-2020 for IT-based services rendered to the Kochi firm.

The report claimed that the Income Tax Appellate Board, while examining the tax returns of CMRL, stumbled upon payments made to Veena and her IT firm. It was also found based on information provided by a few CMRL company officials that no service was rendered by her firm to the company.

Explaining the details of Veena’s IT firm, the Congress leader said he had asked a few questions to her about her company but there was no reply by her.

The Congress MLA said that instead, CPI-M state secretary M.V. Govindan and the party secretariat replied that she is heading a company which was doing legitimate business with CMRL, adding everything was transparent and there was nothing wrong.

“If that be the case, I wish to point out from their audit reports that her company has paid only Rs 6 lakh as taxes, while she has to pay Rs 30 lakh as taxes, as her firm has collected Rs 1.72 crore as service charges from CMRL,” Kuzhalnaden said.

“Kerala is struggling for finances and I am now in front of you and am sending a complaint to Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal that there has been tax evasion by Veena’s firm. I challenge the CPI-M and their leaders that either they accept that what Veena received was illegal gratification,” he added.

Kuzhalnaden also pointed out that her IT firm, according to their audit reports, points out receiving foreign currency but that’s missing in the I-T returns of the firm, which is a very serious matter too.

Disclose assets or forego promotions: U.P. govt tells employees

0

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided that promotions for officers and employees who fail to declare their movable and immovable properties by December 31, 2023, will not be entertained.

Chief secretary Durga Shankar Mishra has issued an order emphasising that all officers and employees are required to, in line with the provisions outlined in Rule 24 of the Uttar Pradesh Government Employees Rules-1956, mandatorily disclose details regarding their movable and immovable properties through the human resources portal.

The state government has developed the human resources portal with the aim of offering timely, efficient, and transparent services.

Directives were issued via a government order to manage matters related to service affairs starting from October 1, 2023, on the human resources portal created by the National Informatics Centre.

Sources said that the state government had previously issued similar orders in 2010. Nonetheless, some officers and employees within specific departments persistently disregard these instructions, prompting the enforcement of mandatory asset declaration on the portal.

The state government had issued orders in this regard earlier in 2010 too. Yet some officers and employees in certain departments continue to violate these orders and this is why declaring the assets on the portal has been made mandatory.

“It has come to notice of the state government that the officers and the employees are not submitting details of their moveable/immoveable properties. No information is given about buying/selling such property in most cases. To curb this tendency of officers and employees, strict action should be taken against those violating this rule,” the order stated.

Arjun Dev Bharti, president of the Secretariat Employees Union, expressed appreciation for the state government’s measures. He suggested that the government should also link promotions to the number of pending investigations and charges of corruption against officers and employees.

30 crude bombs, several country-made pistols found in Prayagraj hostel named ‘Muslim Boarding House’

0

At least 30 crude bombs and several country-made pistols were recovered during a police raid on a trust-run hostel, officials of the Colonelganj police station confirmed on Sunday.

The raid on the hostel, named Muslim Boarding House, was after crude bombs were hurled at a resident, who was injured in the attack, the officials said.

The crude bombs were diffused with the help of a bomb disposal squad.

Also, two FIRs were registered in this connection and the search for the absconding accused was underway.

Colonelganj SHO Brijesh Singh said Asif Iqbal, a resident of room number 11 of the hostel, sought police help as he said there was a murderous assault on him earlier that night.

He told police he had an argument with his room partner Jalal Akbar on the night of August 18. Later that night, the men against whom he later launched the complaint, assaulted Iqbal in his room and also attacked him with a crude bomb and a country-made weapon.

Iqbal somehow managed to flee and report the matter to the police.

“When we reached room number 57 of the hostel, a resident was seen throwing a country-made pistol to the lawn from his room and we nabbed him. We also found 30 crude bombs from different hostel rooms.

Hostel superintendent Irfan Ahmed said room number 57 was allotted to Pratapgarh’s Mohammad Mubassir. The accused who was nabbed with the pistol was identified as Mohd Aubada, who lived in room number 35, he added.

Both Mubassir and Aubada, along with 12 unidentified residents, have been booked under the Explosive Substances Act and the Arms Act, the SHO said.
