BJP objects to Nawab Malik ‘joining’ Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction

Exposing a deep schism in the ruling MahaYuti alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday raised strong reservations to former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik “joining” the breakaway Nationalist Congress Party faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

In what is described as an “unprecedented” move by political circles, BJP’s Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis shot off a letter to his counterpart Ajit Pawar expressing reservations over Malik’s entry to the ruling MayaYuti alliance of Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP-AP.

Fadnavis said that considering the kind of allegations of “treason” that Malik is facing, it “would not be proper” to include him in the MahaYuti alliance.

However, he said that as a MLA, it is Malik’s right to come to the legislature and he even participated in the proceedings on Thursday.

On his objections on the issue, Fadnavis made it clear right in the beginning that he harboured no personal enmity or grudges against Malik.

The BJP leader said that “power comes and goes”, but the country is bigger than power.

Fadnavis pointed out that Malik – who spent 18 months in jail between February 2022-August 2023 – is presently released only on medical bail and till the charges against him are proved, he should be welcomed.

“However, given the kind of allegations he is facing, it would not be appropriate to make him a part of the MahaYuti, that is our clear opinion,” he said.

However, he added that it was Ajit Pawar’s complete prerogative to decide whom he should take in his party.

Justifying his opposition, Fadnavis urged that care should be taken to ensure Malik’s entry does not cause problems in the MahaYuti alliance and all the allies must bear this in mind.

Taking a swipe at the former Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray without naming him, Fadnavis said that though Malik was arrested and jailed (for 18 months) under charges of ‘treason’ (desh-drohi), he was kept in the cabinet by the (then) CM, and the BJP could not endorse that decision.

Fadnavis signed off by expressing hope that Ajit Pawar would take note of the BJP’s sentiments in this regard.

Earlier, in the Maharashtra Assembly, Fadnavis had attacked the MVA for retaining Malik as a minister though he was put behind bars for his “terror” links.

“After he was jailed for his links with terrorists, we had demanded Malik’s resignation but the (then) Thackeray government did not act in the matter. First you reply to that, then ask us… You have no moral right to question us now,” he said.

Returning to the legislature after an absence of nearly two years, Malik created a flutter in Nagpur when he first visited a senior NCP-AP leader’s office and later went to the house, occupying a last row on the treasury benches. This triggered a ruckus both outside and inside the Assembly, with the MVA taking potshots at the BJP.

“Malik, whom the BJP and the CM had called a ‘traitor’ – which I had condemned – what’s the BJP’s opinion now? Where have the BJP leaders gone who keep saying ‘Mian Mian’ to show that they are Muslims? BJP has done the job of destroying the rich and ideal political traditions of Maharashtra. This politics of BJP is terrible,” said Congress state General Secretary Sachin Sawant in Mumbai.

“Nawab Sir, you always taught me to fight against injustice and wrong. While debating on TV, you taught me to speak intelligently against my opponents. I will always follow your teachings and fight against the same opponents,” said NCP-SP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto in a sarcastic note.

However, Ajit Pawar and his party leaders had not commented on these unexpected political twists till late this evening.

White House backs Khalistani terrorist Pannun who threatened to attack Bharat’s Parliament

Calling India and the US strategic partners, the White House has reiterated that it wants the plot to kill a Sikh separatist on its soil fully investigated and those behind it be held “properly accountable”.

“India is a strategic partner. We are deepening that strategic partnership. They are a member of the Quad in the Pacific and we participate with them on a range of security-related issues and we want to see that continue unabated,” John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, said on Thursday.

“That said at the same time we certainly recognise the seriousness of these allegations and as I said earlier we want it fully investigated and those responsible to be held properly accountable,” Kirby told reporters at a news conference here.

He was responding to a question on the impact of the allegations on India-US bilateral ties, and President Joe Biden’s visit to India in 2024.

The indictment of Indian national Nikhil Gupta in plotting to assassinate Khalistan leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has reportedly thrown a spanner in the works of the US President’s attendance at Republic Day next year.

While Kirby said he has no travel to announce at this time, the National Security spokesperson added that they are glad that their Indian counterparts are taking the Pannun issue seriously.

“It’s (the case) under active investigation. We have said that we are glad that our Indian counterparts are taking it seriously in doing that. We want those responsible for these attacks to be held fully accountable but I won’t get ahead of an investigation that isn’t complete,” Kirby said at the news briefing.

The remarks came as US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jonathan Finer visited India this week during which he held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.

FBI Director Christopher Wray is set to visit India next week against the backdrop of the allegations.

When asked about Wray’s planned trip to India, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the visit is in the works as part of the overall bilateral cooperation in areas of cyber-security, counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics.

US federal prosecutors last month accused Gupta of “planning and directing” a plot from India to allegedly kill Pannun in New York.

Reacting to the charges, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it was a “matter of concern” and “contrary to Indian government’s policy”.

India constituted a high-level Enquiry Committee to look into all the relevant aspects of the matter, and said it will take necessary follow-up action based on the findings of the Committee.

Reuters downplays Khalistani separatist threat operating from Western shores

From India’s perspective, these anti-state forces have exploited Western liberalism to live cozy lives and fund their separatist activities back home through illegal activity, all the while the host governments fail to crack down on their interconnected domestic-international crimes due to “political correctness”.

Reuters’ recent report about how “India PM Modi’s Sikh Separatist Fight Driven by Security, Politics” completely misses the point when it comes to informing their audience about this issue. They imply that India doesn’t have any evidence connecting foreign-based members of this movement with crime in Punjab and hint that it’s overreacting to the threat that they pose. There’s also innuendo that Prime Minister Modi is driven by domestic political calculations and not by legitimate national security ones.

It becomes clear after reviewing this piece that Reuters doesn’t really understand why India is opposed to Sikh separatism. This cosmopolitan civilizationstate always opposes separatism out of principle in order to safeguard the historical unity of its diverse people. Those who employ terrorist threats in pursuit of this goal, like the ones that the individual at the center of the latest scandal made to India’s national airlines last month and even its parliament earlier this week, and deeply despised by the state.

Both were made after that person was allegedly targeted by Indian assassins in June, however, during which time they were presumably under federal protection as is standard protocol in such situations. This observation leads to the next point regarding how unacceptable it is for America to host and even arguably protect such an individual who makes terroristic threats to its strategic Indian partner. The same goes for Canada and other Western countries that harbor Delhi-designated terrorists-separatists.

From India’s perspective, these anti-state forces have exploited Western liberalism to live cozy lives and fund their separatist activities back home through illegal activity, all the while the host governments fail to crack down on their interconnected domestic-international crimes due to “political correctness”. This is deemed to be a betrayal of their bilateral partnerships with India, which is made all the more insulting after they refuse to take action to curtail these individuals’ activities after being made aware of them.

The FBI chief’s upcoming trip to India to discuss the Department of Justice’s charges against the unnamed government official who’s accused of orchestrating June’s foiled assassination attempt will be a defining moment in their ties. He’ll share whatever evidence he claims to have in support of his government’s accusations while they’ll share everything that they have in support of their own claims regarding the allegedly targeted individual’s criminal activities.

From there, both sides will proceed with their respective investigations, though it’s premature to predict how they’ll end. One possible scenario is that the unnamed Indian official and the person who they allegedly hired to organize the assassination are found guilty by the American courts. The second-mentioned, who’s presently in US custody after being detained in the Czech Republic, might later be sent back to India as part of a deal if Delhi agrees to take disciplinary action against the unnamed official.

Truth be told, however, India isn’t expected to “fall on its own sword” for a variety of reasons. Considering this, any guilty verdict by the American courts would likely generate lots of opprobrium from India, which would predictably maintain its innocence. To make matters worse, the US probably won’t curtail the activities of the Delhi-designated terrorist-separatist at the center of this scandal, who might continue operating with impunity and possibly even make more threats against India.

In this much more likely scenario, Indo-US ties could worsen to the detriment of their shared geostrategic interests in managing China’s rise. That outcome might speculatively be by design, however, if America’s liberalglobalist policymaking faction that’s once again thought to be calling the shots believes that it’s required to keep the incipient thaw with China on track as was explained here. In that case, Indo-US ties would be reduced to a bargaining chip in the US’ New Cold War rivalry with China.

Scenario forecasting aside, the most important point for readers to remember is that the US’ hosting of Delhi-designated terrorists-separatists who continue to make public threats against India – including while under presumable federal protection – crosses a red line in their relations, thus making it a pivotal issue for their future ties. Unless the US reverses its informal policy of waging Hybrid War on India via these “plausibly deniable” means, there’s a high likelihood that their strategic partnership will suffer.

“Reading Dharmic texts like Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana makes patients mentally stronger, and boost their morale during treatment”: Kanpur cardiologist Dr. Neeraj Kumar

A cardiologist from Kanpur has introduced the practice of making religious scriptures an integral part of treatment.

Dr Neeraj Kumar, a heart surgeon at Laxmipat Singhania Institute of Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery, is winning the hearts of his patients by giving them Bhagavad Gita, Hanuman Chalisa, Sunderkand and Ramayana to read before surgery and long-term treatment.

“Reading religious books makes patients mentally stronger, and boost their morale during treatment,” said Dr Kumar.

“Whether it is for treatment of heart ailments or other diseases, the immunity power of the patient together with medicines, play a crucial role in the recovery,” said the doctor who started this campaign about a year ago.

“Once the disease is diagnosed, the patient gets mentally worried about his treatment and family. In such a situation, reading Gita, Sunderkand Hanuman Chalisa and Ramayana diverts the patient’s mind, which also has a positive effect on his health,” he explained.

“Patients who read religious books when they are admitted in the hospital, appear happier than other patients when they are discharged,” claimed the doctor, who uses his personal fund to buy these books for patients. “Initially, patients were given newspapers to read. But since the feedback was not encouraging, I started giving these books to our patients and the results are encouraging,” he said.

Sarvam AI raises $41 million led by Lightspeed, largest by a Bharatiya AI startup

0

Indian generative AI startup Sarvam AI on Thursday said it has raised $41 million in its Series A round led by Lightspeed and supported by Peak XV Partners and Vinod Khosla-run Khosla Ventures.

This represents the largest raise at this stage for an Indian AI startup.

Founded by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam AI plans to develop the “full-stack” for Generative AI ranging from research-led innovations in training custom AI models to an enterprise-grade platform for authoring and deployment.

“Having backed some of the most influential names in GenAI globally, we are excited by Sarvam AI’s unique approach in combining model innovation and application development to build population-scale solutions for India,” said Hemant Mohapatra, Partner, Lightspeed.

Sarvam AI believes that its full-stack approach will accelerate adoption of GenAI in India, especially given that enterprises see the potential of GenAI but are grappling with how to leverage it for their business. Sarvam AI will train AI models to support the diverse set of Indian languages and voice-first interfaces.

The company will also work with Indian enterprises to co-build domain-specific AI models on their data.

Finally, the company aims to create population-scale impact layering GenAI on top of the highly successful India stack specifically for public-good applications.

“India has demonstrated that it can harness technology differently, and with GenAI we have an opportunity to reimagine how this technology can add value to people’s lives,” said Raghavan.

Vinod Khosla, a pioneer in Silicon Valley AI investments including his early support for OpenAI, said that “we see several countries having sovereign efforts to build GenAI models given its strategic importance. We need companies like Sarvam AI to develop deep expertise for building AI in and for India.”

Led by its successful founders, Sarvam AI is putting together a high-quality team.

“The race towards ever more powerful AI is both an exciting and divisive one. We named our company Sarvam, which in Sanskrit means ‘all’, as we are intentionally invested in technical and ecosystem innovations that make this technology accessible to all,” said Kumar.

Junaid & 3 others booked for sexual assault and forcible conversion of Hindu mother-daughter duo: Prayagraj, UP

In yet another heartwrenching case of sexual assault and forced Islamic conversion, a man identified as Junaid was booked along with four others by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) police. The incident was reported from UP’s Prayagraj, where a mother-daughter duo were threatened to embrace Islam.

Islamic cleric Mushtaq Ali’s role

In the case documented under FIR number 586/2023 at the Colonelganj police station within the district, the accused have been identified as the deceased cleric Mushtaq Ali and his three sons—Akram, Junaid, and Faizan—alongside two others.

Sangeeta Gupta, the victim, reported to the police that her late father, Baccha Gupta, had been lured into conversion years ago by Maulana Mushtaq Ali, who falsely claimed it would enhance his business. Baccha, the sweet shop owner, came across Ali, who convinced him that regular attendance at the mosque and presenting chadar could significantly improve his business prospects. Succumbing to Ali’s influence, Baccha started frequenting the Mazar and, within months, was manipulated into converting to Islam. Ali directed them to discontinue worshipping Hindu deities and instead present chadar at the Mazar.

Later, Ali insisted that they build a grave within their home, cautioning that non-compliance would lead to the entire family facing dire consequences through his supposedly miraculous ‘jhad-fook’ powers. His influence extended to Sangeeta’s residence, where she lived with her husband and in-laws, and he kept a close watch on her daughters.

After her father’s passing, Ali continued to terrorize Sangeeta, coercing her and her daughter to visit the Mazar situated in the Chhota Baghada area of the town. There, he confined the minor to a room and subjected her to sexual assault. Upon learning of the incident, Sangeeta confronted Mushtaq, only to be threatened with severe consequences. Ali asserted his supposed ability to cause harm, citing the fate that befell her father through his alleged magical powers. Consequently, the daughter’s health deteriorated, leading to her eventual demise on 28 December 2018.

Tormented by the grief of losing her daughter, Sangeeta yielded to fear and obediently followed every demand made by Ali. She surrendered money, jewellery, and all items requested for the Mazar, all consumed by the dread of his alleged magical powers.

Junaid, Faizan and others continue exploiting the Hindu family

On 23 October 2023, Mushtaq passed away. On that very day, his sons Akram, Junaid, and Faizan visited Sangeeta’s house, asserting that Mushtaq had instructed them before his death to bring her to the mausoleum at any cost. Fearing their threats and intimidation, Sangeeta reluctantly went to the Mazar on 24 October, where she endured both verbal and physical abuse.

In her formal complaint, Sangeeta revealed that Junaid and his brothers forced her to spit on the floor and consume it. They confined her to a room, subjected her to inappropriate touching, and made offensive remarks. Moreover, they insisted that Sangeeta bring her elder daughter to the Mazar. She emphasized that she was not the only victim, as numerous other women experienced similar torture and assault. According to Sangeeta, the accused and their family coerced these women into converting to Islam, involving female members of the family as necessary for the purpose of conversion and manipulation.

Sangeeta stated, “I approached both Colonelganj and Annie Basent’s police stations, but to no avail, and no one filed an FIR against the perpetrators.” This complaint letter was submitted to the authorities on 11 November, and the FIR was eventually lodged on 5 December.

According to the FIR, Junaid and his brothers have been booked under various sections, including 147 (rioting), 323 (causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult), 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (A) (sexual harassment), and provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Act. Police said no case has been booked against Junaid’s father, Mushtaq Ali, as he is dead.

Higher judiciary comes to rescue, stays interim order against Kerala FM Thomas Isaac in corruption probe

Two-time former state Finance Minister and top CPI(M) leader, Thomas Isaac, on Thursday got a breather when a Division Bench of the Kerala High Court stayed a November 24 interim order of a single-judge which allowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to issue fresh summons to him and Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) officials in connection with a probe into KIFFB’s financial transactions.

“These writ appeals came from two different writ petitions pending before this court. A learned single judge passed a common order on 10/10/2022 after hearing both sides. The order interdicted respondents from issuing summons pursuant to investigation initiated under FEMA read with provisions of the Income Tax Act. On 24/11/2023 the matter came up before justice Devan Ramachandran of this court.

The learned judge ordered that the writ petition would not stand in the way of the respondents issuing fresh summons. We note that the earlier order by Justice VG Arun was a detailed one. Therefore, without hearing the matter, another judge cannot issue an order virtually modifying the order of the other single judge… We are not on the merit of the controversy involved in the matter…. In light of the law we set aside the interim order dated 24/11/2023,” the Division Bench ordered.

Isaac and KIIFB had challenged the single Bench interim order after the ED had issued summons to them in connection with alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) by issuing ‘Masala Bonds’, i.e, rupee denominated bonds outside India. This was done during the tenure of Isaac as Finance Minister during 2016-21.

Isaac challenged the summons issued by the ED seeking his documents as well as those of his family members in connection with the probe.

issue fresh summons and continue with its investigation, subject to further orders.

This breather appears to be based on technical issues as the Division Bench said they were not going into the merit of the issue, thus enabling the ED to return to the single Bench again to force their points and the need for issuing summons to both the parties.

Shri Ram Anubhav Kendra to come up in Ayodhya

The Uttar Pradesh government plans to develop Shri Ram Anubhav Kendra and Panchavati Island, on 75 acres of land near Guptar Ghat on the banks of Saryu River.

Ram Anubhav Kendra on Panchvati Island aims to instilL a sense of pride among the people for Vedic civilisation.

The objective of the government is to promote the assimilation of these cultural roots into daily life and foster a path towards happier existence.

The construction of Ram Anubhav Kendra will involve the use of temporary structures, which will be dismantled during the rainy season as the centre will be non-operational during this period as a precautionary measure, considering its proximity to the river.

After monsoon, the structures will be reassembled and the centre will resume operations. To ensure safety, the structures will be positioned at a considerable distance from the river, creating a 100-foot buffer zone to eliminate any potential accident. Prior to the construction and operation of the centre, all necessary approvals and NOCs from regulatory departments such as the municipal corporation, fire department, electrical safety, and pollution control board, will be obtained.

According to the proposal, the primary focus will be on the implementation of a robust flood protection management system on Panchavati Island.

Officials from the departments concerned will be actively involved in ensuring compliance with all regulations.

Additionally, a committee would be established to conduct inspections every 15 days to prevent any deficiency at any level.

Panchavati Island will be a no-plastic zone. Bio-digestive septic tanks will be used for sewage disposal and water will be treated by STP according to standards and will be used in horticulture and agriculture.

‘Shree Anna’ (millet) will play a prominent role in this project. Various programmes, including meditation, pranayama, yagya, havan, will be organised for yoga practitioners. Naturopathy and ayurveda centres will also be established.

Organic and cosmic agriculture methods will be employed for growing crops on Panchvati Island. Local folk artists will find employment opportunities through traditional folk singing and cultural events.

Devotees will be given a chance to plant a sapling in Ayodhya in memory of their ancestors.

A Taru Tal Vedic School will be established for economically weaker students and centres for bamboo skill development and adventure sports training will be set up.

Panchvati Island will provide employment opportunities for local farmers and labourers, officials said.

Vaishnaw PM’s favourite for CM’s post in Rajasthan: Sources

0

As the suspense over the choice of the Chief Minister in Rajasthan continues, party leaders confirmed that Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is considered to be the strongest contender for the coveted post among all the other names doing the rounds.

Also, there is a major possibility that two Deputy CMs will be appointed to balance social equations.

The oath taking ceremony could be organised on December 12 in Jaipur, confirmed party sources.

Ashwini Vaishnaw is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah.

Technocrat Vaishnaw’s management experience is considered to be good and he seems fit to balance the bureaucratic and political lobby, said sources. They added that the party is looking forward to a Brahmin face who also fits the OBC category.

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is also in the race and has political influence, too, but the party already has Rajput CMs in other states.

Given the social engineering that the party wants to do, Arjun Ram Meghwal’s name is yet again among the top contenders because he is the blue-eyed boy of Modi and Shah and comes from the Dalit community.

There are about 18 per cent Dalits in Rajasthan and 20 per cent in the country. The Dalits do not vote for the BJP and the party does not have a Dalit CM in any state. If it makes Arjun Ram Meghwal the CM then it can cash in on this in the Lok Sabha elections.

Also, having been a bureaucrat, Arjun Ram Meghwal also has administrative understanding. There is less possibility of Rajasthan MLAs having any objection to his name.

The other name doing the rounds is Om Mathur who, like Modi, comes from a Sangh background and is close to him. The Prime Minister has been close to Mathur since he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Mathur has also been the state President of Rajasthan and incharge of Chhattisgarh elections. The chances of the BJP winning there were next to none, hence their strategy is being considered very important in this victory.

Second, making Mathur the CM will help the BJP balance the political equations of Marwar and Mewar.

Third, he comes from the Kayastha community which is accepted everywhere in Rajasthan.

Kirodi Lal Meena is yet another leader who cornered the Gehlot Government on issues like paper leak. He activated the BJP, which was weak for the last four years, by bringing up paper leak and other issues and creating problems for Gehlot. If seen on a caste basis only, he is known as ‘Baba’ in both the SC and ST communities.

Chittorgarh MP CP Joshi is yet another name doing the rounds as he was made the state President just before the Assembly elections. Joshi is associated with the Sangh and was previously the state president of the BJP Yuva Morcha.

Baba Balaknath is another contender who is being compared with the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The Nath Mathh in Rohtak is considered to be influential in Haryana, Rajasthan and surrounding areas. Hindutva fits into the card and polarisation will become easy for the BJP.

One of the other strong contenders is Diya Kumari as she is close to the central leadership. Second, she can be described as an option in place of Vasundhara Raje. Third, if the BJP plays the woman card, it will benefit the party.

The Central Government brought the Women’s Reservation Bill and Diya Kumari’s appointment will give the message that the party gives importance to women.
