A court at Sonipat in Haryana has ordered former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to appear before it on February 17 after a plea was filed against AAP convenor who has accused the BJP of “poisoning” the Yamuna river.

On Wednesday, Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Goyal was hearing a complaint filed by the State of Haryana through the State Disaster Management Authority against Arvind Kejriwal under Section 54 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The complaint alleged that Kejriwal spread misinformation and caused panic among the residents of Delhi and Haryana with his “Yamuna poisoned” remark.

“So in view of aforesaid provision, let, notice to respondent Arvind Kejriwal be issued for 17.02.2025. He is directed to appear in person before this court on the next date of hearing, if he has to say anything in the matter. If he does not appear before this court on next date of hearing, it is deemed that he has nothing to say in the matter and further proceedings shall be conducted in accordance with law,” the court ordered.

Earlier, Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Vipul Goel said that the state government has taken strong cognisance of the statement by Arvind Kejriwal regarding Delhi’s water supply and has filed a case against him in the Sonipat court under the Disaster Management Act.

Days ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, Kejriwal said that the BJP was ‘mixing poison’ in the city’s water supply in an attempt to “create chaos… hoping the blame will fall” on his party’s administration.

“The people of Delhi get drinking water from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh… but the Haryana government has mixed poison in the water coming to Delhi from the Yamuna and sent it here… it is only due to the vigilance of our Delhi Jal Board engineers that this water was stopped,” said the former Chief Minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Delhi on Wednesday, also took a direct swipe at AAP over its allegations. PM Modi strongly refuted the claim that Haryana was contaminating Yamuna’s water and ridiculed the notion that the BJP-led state government would poison its own people.

Reacting to the allegation, the Haryana Chief Minister also slammed Kejriwal. “AAP-da’s wooden sandals (khadau) Chief Minister Atishi Marlena ji, you are welcome on the banks of Yamuna in Palla village. There is no poison in the water coming to Delhi from Haryana, but your minds are definitely filled with poison,” the Haryana Chief Minister said.

Amid the raging controversy over the Yamuna River, the Haryana Chief Minister drank water from the river near the Delhi border and further slammed Kejriwal for “spreading lies”.

“I drank the water of the holy Yamuna on the border of Haryana without any hesitation. Kejriwal has blatantly lied. Even I’m having relatives in Delhi. The AAP convener should immediately tender an apology,” the Haryana Chief Minister wrote on X.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government after a huge amount of cash, liquor bottles, and election pamphlets were recovered from a government vehicle bearing a Punjab registration plate which was parked at the Copernicus Road near Punjab Bhawan here.

Reacting to this incident, BJP’s IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya wrote on X, “Yesterday a huge consignment of liquor from Punjab was seized. Today, a vehicle with a Punjab number plate with ‘Punjab Sarkar’ written over it was found parked at the Copernicus Marg near Punjab Bhawan. Upon searching this vehicle, a huge amount of cash, several liquor bottles, and Aam Aadmi Party pamphlets were recovered inside the vehicle. AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal wants to rig these elections with the use of money and liquor. What a disgusting man he is.”

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva also criticised the AAP government and said: “Till now we thought that Arvind Kejriwal has institutionalised corruption in Delhi government. They (AAP) have polluted the water of Yamuna river and the air of Delhi, but today we understand that the AAP has also polluted the political system of Delhi.”

Sachdeva also added that in the last 35 years of being in public life, he has never seen such an incident in which such a huge amount of money and liquor bottles were recovered from a government vehicle.

He asked Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to give a clear answer to the people of Delhi on this matter.

Earlier on Wednesday, BJP candidate from the New Delhi Assembly seat, Parvesh Verma, alleged that AAP workers were visiting various constituencies in private vehicles with “Delhi Government” stickers and distributing money and liquor.

“In large numbers, AAP workers were visiting various areas in private vehicles with Uttar Pradesh registration numbers, distributing money and liquor. These vehicles had ‘Delhi Government’ stickers on them,” Verma charged in a press conference.

He said that complaints had been filed with the Election Commission and Delhi Police and called for strict action against his AAP rival.

AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal is the party’s candidate from the New Delhi seat. Delhi will vote on February 5 and the counting will take place on February 8.

Tahir Hussain, a key accused of 2020 Delhi riots stepped out of the Tihar jail on Wednesday morning and launched his poll campaign in the Mustafabad constituency, amidst police supervision.

Tahir Hussain, a former Councillor from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is contesting the 2025 Delhi elections on AIMIM ticket. He was recently granted a six-day custody parole by the Apex court for canvassing in the Assembly elections.

Hussain stepped out of Tihar jail this morning and reached Mustafabad constituency, where he interacted with his supporters, greeted local people and also exhorted them to support his candidature. The riots accused was flanked by the police personnel.

The AIMIM candidate has been granted custody parole by the Supreme Court from January 29 to February 3, allowing him to campaign under police supervision for 12 hours daily, from 6 am to 6 pm.

The jailed ex-AAP leader, speaking to IANS, exuded confidence about his good show in the impending elections despite him being ‘abandoned’ by the ruling party.

“Despite spending five years in jail, people of Mustafabad are here to support me. It’s they who will decide my fate,” he said.

Hussain further stated, “After five years, I have had the opportunity to come out of jail, and I am very happy. When I was leaving jail, I was anxious and worried but I am happy now because so many people came here to meet me, to see me, to catch a glimpse of me.”

He said he is not banking on any brand and was rather relying on people’s support.

“The people of Mustafabad are witnessing a son, a brother amidst them. Seeing them come in hordes makes me very happy. I fully trust them,” Hussain stated.

Delhi’s Mustafabad constituency boasts of huge minority population and the leading political parties have fielded mostly Muslim faces, hoping to encash the sentiments.

Competing against AIMIM’s Tahir Hussian would be Congress candidate Ali Mehdi, son of former MLA Hasan Mehdi. AAP has fielded Adil Ahmad Khan, a journalist-turned-politician.

BJP has nominated Mohan Singh Bisht, a sitting MLA from the neighbouring Karawal Nagar.

“Bharat must move to Zero Tolerance for Border Transgressions from Bangladesh”, Swarajyamag, January 29, 2025:

“New Delhi must make it clear to Dhaka that the border is inviolable, and it is Bangladesh’s responsibility to ensure its citizens understand this.

The 4,096.7-kilometre Indo-Bangladesh border has long been highly porous, and efforts by the Border Security Force (BSF) to curb border transgressions have always evoked protests from Bangladesh.

Lately, such protests have grown shriller and more aggressive. The BSF’s punitive actions to curb smuggling or illegal infiltration by Bangladeshis into India have faced sharp condemnation not only from various organisations and civil society but also from Dhaka’s ruling establishment…….”

Inviting UAPA accused Engineer Rashid as an Icon in Delhi: What’s the Point?

0

An event to be held on February 10 at Constitution Club in New Delhi has raised concerns as Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, an MP from Baramulla, and an accused under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), i.e., the anti-terror Act, on charges of receiving terror fund, being invited as a ‘guest of honour.’ The event is being organised by Delhi Today Group, which was reportedly founded in 2018 and is in the news-media sector. Incidentally, another poster mentioned the venue as Maharashtra Sadan.[1]

According to a report, published in Kashmir Despatch, the invite was extended to Rashid by Rajat Kumar Srivastava, the head of the Delhi Today Group.[2] Rashid is the leader of Awami Ittehad Party (Awami Ittehad roughly meaning union or alliance of the people). As per the report, the AIP has welcomed the invitation, which was seen as a recognition of Rashid’s “powerful leadership” and “commitment to public service”. A few days ago, Rashid had approached the Delhi High Court seeking expeditious disposal of his second regular bail plea.[3]

Rashid was made an accused in the second supplementary chargesheet filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019. The NIA had said that he was in touch with terror outfits based in Pakistan and promoted separatism from public platforms. He was arrested a few days after the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which provided a special status to Jammu & Kashmir, in 2019.

Rashid was accused by the NIA of having received funds from UN-proscribed and Pakistan-based Hafeez Sayeed, who headed the anti-India terror outfit Jamaat-ud-Dawa. Apart from Rashid, a few others, including Shabbir Shah, Mashrat Alam and Asiya Andrabi were also arrested.[4]

The posters also claim that the event is supported by Tata Trusts. Interestingly, the poster also mentions that “We support” Ministry of MSME (Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) and G20.

It is indeed a matter of concern that an award ceremony, which seeks to commemorate 86 years of legendary late Ratan Tata, is supposed to be graced by a person accused of receiving terror funds. If true, then, irrespective of whether Rashid’s bail is approved by the court, it indeed should be a matter for concern to those running the Trust that a person accused of being in touch with terror outfits based in Pakistan be given such a hallowed platform. Receiving terror funding is a serious offence, and a person accused of the same has to go through the entire legal procedure for a conclusion either way; not grace an event where people having done iconic works are to be awarded.

During his interim bail to campaign for Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections last year, Rashid had asked his supporters to give him 20-25 seats. He had said that he would “make Modi dance to his tunes” and solve the Kashmir issue in three days, but he could not do so.

from a position of weakness.[5] Claiming that he too was in favour of “naya Kashmir (new Kashmir)”, but not on the lines of what the PM was talking about, he had said that he had also sought help from other political parties, who had signed what was called ‘Gupkar Declaration’, to stop the abrogation of Article 370.

JPC meet on Waqf Bill ends; final draft adopted

he Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting that was held to scrutinise the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill ended on Wednesday with the JPC adopting the Bill with 14 votes in favour and 11 against. The Opposition members of the JPC have time till 4 pm on Wednesday to register their dissent.

The JPC had on Monday approved the Waqf Amendment Bill with 14 amendments proposed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) members.

Opposition MPs had submitted 44 changes which were rejected, which led to a furore by political parties. Voting on the proposed changes was held today.

On Monday, the Waqf Amendment Bill that is seeking to bring reforms in the way Waqf Boards are administered across the country got cleared by the JPC with a margin of 16:10 members (16 from NDA and 10 from Opposition parties).

One of the amendments aims to empower the state government to appoint an officer to determine whether a property is Waqf or not — instead of the District Collector who was given absolute powers to do so in the proposed Bill.

In the Waqf Act 1995, that power is vested in survey commissioners and additional commissioners.

The panel also approved changes to another contentious provision that mandated the inclusion of two non-Muslim members in the Central Waqf Council and state Waqf Boards.

It dropped the term ‘mandatory’ and proposed changes in the composition of the Waqf Board by increasing it to three members, including a scholar.

According to reports, a total of 66 amendments were proposed in the Waqf Bill including 23 by the ruling BJP MPs and 44 from Opposition members.

JPC chairman and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, speaking to reporters said on Monday that it was the final meeting of the Parliamentary panel and a total of 14 amendments had been cleared on the basis of a majority.

“In the past six months of deliberations, we discussed many amendments. All amendments were put to vote today and members gave out their verdict with 16 voting in its favour while 14 opposed the amendments,” he told newsmen.

The JPC meets have witnessed chaotic scenes with the Opposition accusing the committee chairman of bias and inclination towards the ruling party.

The Opposition also claimed that the procedure was being hastened to start a narrative ahead of Assembly elections in the national Capital.

As many as 11 Opposition MPs in the JPC on Monday hit out at the ‘autocratic’ behaviour of Chairman Jagdambika Pal and his haste in accepting the 14 amendments proposed by the NDA members.

In a joint statement, the Opposition MPs said, “As the committee has arrived at its closure part of the deliberation, we the members of the Opposition registered our protest then and there both in conducting the proceedings of the JPC by the chairman as well the gross and serious deviations from the rules and procedures contemplated thereon.”

Citing several instances of being denied the time to study documents, the MPs said they want to highlight a few wilful and wanton “disregard by the Chairman in sharing the details of deliberations of the Committee.”

The allegations were however brushed aside by the BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, who said that every member was given “ample time and was heard out by the JPC chief.”

The JPC committee on the Waqf Bill had to submit its recommendations by November 29, however, the deadline was extended till February 13.
