In a shocking incident, a person of Pakistani origin vandalized the Guru Arjan Dev Ji Gurudwara in Derby, England. The incident happened early morning on Monday, 25th May, 2020 when majority of the Muslim community from around the world was preparing to celebrate Eid.
Guru Arjan Dev ji the fifth Guru of Sikhs compiled the first official scripture of Sikh religion ‘Adi Granth’ which is highly venerated among Sikh community.
The perpetrator has been arrested by British Police. A hand written note has also been found by the police during the investigation of this hate crime which reveals the concerns of the accused regarding Kashmir. By this act the Pakistani citizen in question sent a veiled threat to Sikh community and exhorted them to join hands with Muslims on the matter of Kashmir. The message written in broken English read as “India did fir(s)t lockdown after Allah give Punishment. Try to help Kashmir people otherwise problem everyone (sic). Try to understand.” and also had a phone number scribbled on it.
The unnamed man had broken the window panes & glass door of the Gurudwara which reportedly resulted in damages worth thousands of pounds. Fortunately, no individual was hurt during the incident. The CCTV footage later showed the smashed glass door, scattered glass all over the floor and the accused inside the Gurudwara.
Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amrinder Singh said “Such intolerance & hatred must end if humanity has to survive, especially when the world is in the midst of an unprecedented crisis.”
This however is not an isolated incident in which the Sikhs have come under attack from Islamists. Just a month back, 25 Sikh worshippers were murdered in a Gurudwara in Kabul. Back home in Mumbai, Sikh youth Inder Singh was brutally stabbed by Islamists for his advice to wear face mask during corona epidemic.
A couple of days ago, a Sikh cop Anup Singh was martyred in a terror attack in Pulwama, Kashmir and all Bharatiyas expressed condolences at his martyrdom but some Kashmiri Muslims made celebratory posts on social media regarding his death. Not only Sikhs, people of other Bhartiya religions have also faced intolerance in England. Last year, in August, Pakistani goons had attacked Hindus gathered outside Bharat’s Embassy to celebrate the 73rd Bharatiya Independence day.
