Bangladesh: Islamists attacked Hindu pilgrims en route to the Chandranath Temple

Attacks on Hindu minorities continue in Bangladesh. This time, Islamists attacked Hindu pilgrims on their way to the famous Shaktipeeth Chandranath Temple. At least 10 Hindu pilgrims were injured in the attack.

The Shaktipeeth Chandranath Temple is situated in the hill areas of Sitakund of Chattragram district. Every year, Hindu pilgrims visit the temple after walking a long way through the hill.

As per the local sources, yesterday, on 29th of December, when some pilgrims were on their way to the temple, Islamists attacked them with sticks and country-made sharp weapons. Several pilgrims got injured. At least ten pilgrims are now in the Hospital and are undergoing treatment.

Notably, Islamists have been targeting this holy pilgrimage site for many years. Beef parties in Namaz are regularly happening. To prevent this and to save the sanctity of the site, Hindus are demanding special arrangements and provisions from the Government.

On the day of the incident, some Hindus were putting up banners with warnings to keep the sanctity of the holy site. Some Islamists and Muslim drivers of CNG cars attacked Hindu pilgrims.

A Hindu activist said, “The shrine committee manages the holy pilgrimage site. But the committee is just on paper. They abide by the government. They do nothing to keep up the sanctity of the place. That’s why anger is rising among common Hindus.”
