Bangladesh: Court sentences Hindu youth to 10 years imprisonment over ‘blasphemy’

A Bangladesh court sentenced Titu Roy to 10 years of imprisonment over blasphemy charges. Also, the accused has been ordered to pay a fine of fifty thousand BDT and five months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

Yesterday, Justice Abdul Majid of Rangpur Cyber Tribunal announced this judgement.

Titu Roy is a resident of Thakurpara village under Gangachara police station of Rangpur district.

Per case details, on 28th October 2017, Titu Roy uploaded a derogatory post on Facebook about Islam’s Prophet Nabi Muhammad. He allegedly posted from a Facebook profile named ‘Md Titu’.

After the Facebook post went viral, a radical Islamic mob attacked the Hindu village in Rangpur on 10th November. Islamic mob broke and looted several houses and put fire. Later, Cybercrime Department arrested Titu Roy from Narayanganj.

Prashanta Kumar Roy, appearing for Titu Roy, has expressed dissatisfaction with this judgement. He said during a forensic examination, no proof was found that the post was uploaded from Titu Roy’s phone. “Titu Roy is illiterate and doesn’t know how to use Facebook. We will move to the high court against this judgement,” the lawyer said.
