Bangladesh: Cadres of ruling party Awami League attack the rally of minorities in Comilla, 5 injured

Ahead of Durga Puja, attacks on the minority communities continue in Muslim majority Bangladesh. Now, reports have been coming that the ruling party, Awami League cadres have attacked a rally of minorities in Comilla Town.

As per the reports, yesterday, on 13th of October, Friday, the biggest organisation of different minority communities of Bangladesh, ‘Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Oikya Parishad’ organised a protest rally in Comilla town. The rally was against the recent attacks on Hindu temples, the hateful comment on a Hindu MP named Mrinal Kanti Das and also for the demand of a three days holiday during Durga Puja. But, when the rally was passing through the road near Tax house, cadres of Awami League attacked.

Cadres of Awami League’s sister organization Chhatra League(Students Wing) and Yuva League(Youth Wing) attacked the rally with sticks and other country-made arms. The armed cadres attacked the members of the minority communities, beat them up with sticks in front of the Police. At least five people got injured in the attack.

General Secretary of the organisation, Tapan Bakshi said, “We condemn this attack. We were told by Police to return. We were returning. But, suddenly some people attacked us from behind.”

Notably, one day before the rally, MP from Comilla Town constituency, Bahauddin Bahar threatened the organisers not to let out any rally. So far, no complaints have been filed.
