Bangladesh: Temples robbed; Awami League nominates Mayor accused of grabbing Hindu temple lands

Persecution of the Hindus and attacks on Hindu temples by Islamists in Bangladesh is still been going on. Bangladesh grabbed international attention during the Durga Puja because of the genocidal attacks on the Hindus and ransacking of Hindu temples after one Iqbal Hossain kept a copy of the Quran at a Durga Puja pandal so as to frame Hindus in a case of blasphemy. It was wishful thinking that the country may now start working toward the safety of the marginalized and victimized Hindu community.

However, the situation continues to be just as bad if not worse for the Hindus in Bangladesh. A theft in the Gouranga Mahaprabhu temple has been reported from Pabna’s Chatmohor. On Saturday, December 4, devotees held kirtan till 8 PM and then left the temple premises. The next morning, when devotees went to pluck flowers at the temple premises, they noticed that the windows of the temples were torn down. Upon entering the temple, they found that few Narayan Shilas and Shivalinga have been stolen.

The local police were also called in. Later, the temple committee informed that the robbers had looted 4 touchstones, 29 Narayan Sheelas, 1 Shivalinga, and 4 asanas made of brass. Police officer Sajib Shahreen inspected the site and interrogated the locals as well as the members of the temple committee. He has assured that investigations are going on and the culprits will be nabbed soon. However, there has not been any update on the case till the last reports.

On November 19, locals nabbed 25-year-old Muslim youth Mizan just as he was about to place a copy of the Quran in a Hindu puja pavilion located in the Chowdhury Bazar area in Habibganj. This falls within the Sylhet Division of Bangladesh, and around 70% of the traders in Chowdhury Bazar are Hindus. The locals grew suspicious of him as he was loitering around the premises. Seeing no one around he pulled a packet from his bag, but the locals nabbed him before he could put it in the puja area and create another issue.

The local police were informed and when the packet was opened in their presence, it turned out to be the Quran. The Muslim youth is a resident of Noakhali where the riots had intensified during Durga Puja. “Police are questioning him to know details of his motive,” said Habiganj Sardar Model police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Dous Mohammad.

The police may go on investigating the motive, but knowing the dynamics of the Islamist country, one can be sure that the culprit was only trying to provoke another Islamist attack on the Hindus. While the police keep assuring that they will investigate the cases of temple loot and punish those who ransack or enter Hindu worship premises illegally, the reality of such cases is far from these assurances.

Grabbing of temple land by Islamists is also a serious concern in Bangladesh. A righteous judiciary would prosecute such land-grabbers, but it is probably too much to expect from our Islamist neighbor. In recent news being reported from the country, the incumbent mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, Selina Hayat Ivy Rahman has been given the ticket to contest in the City Corporation election by the Bangladesh Awami League.

Though the Awami League claims to be a minority-conscious political party that safeguards the Hindus, they have once again proved otherwise by giving the election ticket to Rahman who is accused of grabbing massive areas of temple land by exerting the political influence. Her getting the ticket to contest the elections again had led to great dissatisfaction among the Hindu locals in the area who had alleged that the Awami League contestant and her relatives have grabbed a huge area of land belonging to an ancient Hindu temple worth hundreds of crores of Taka last year.

The locals also accuse the politician of using the Debottor Property land for building commercial establishments. The Hindus had staged a massive movement at that time; Hindus living abroad had also participated in the movement. Despite this, the Awami League nominated her as their contestant for the upcoming elections, a move that has irked the Hindu locals.

  1. The fate of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh is sealed. Time and again Islamist gangs organize violence, rape , massacre of Hindus besides, land grabbing and vandalizing Hindu properties there . But the authorities are quick to act! They stage an arrest syndrome immediately. These are all eyewash. A show-up strategy! Some culprits are nabbed to bolster B’desh’s image on an international scale but after a shortwhile of detention, they are released from the backdoor. The B’desh Govt. has failed to adopt any resolute measure to eliminate Muslim Jihadists, rather it tacitly supports them because it is a Muslim-majority country whose entire administration is run by the Muslims who naturally have soft corner towards their fellow Muslims be they Jihadists or terrorists. But one-day B’desh will have to pay the price for nurturing Muslim extremists, as Pakistan is paying now! These Jihadists will one day overrun the entire B’desh, overpower its elected Govt. (like Taliban), enforce Medieval Shariat Laws, wage violence, launch mass murder in the name of Islamic Law and drag the country’s economy to total disaster. And B’desh will be a failed state!
