Celebrating Children’s Holi: Rotorua Hindi School Embraces the Festival of Colours

On Sunday, 7 April 2024, the vibrant spirit of Holi, the Festival of Colours, will come alive as students at the Rotorua Hindi School gather to immerse themselves in a kaleidoscope of hues at Owhata, Rotorua.

The festivities will unfold at the Tiaki Early Learning Centre, 25 B Umukaria Road, Hinemoa Point, Owhata, Rotorua, providing ample space for children to revel in the joyous occasion. Chosen for its expansive outdoor area, fenced for the safety of children, the location also offers opportunities for parents to explore nearby attractions such as the Marae, Rotorua Lake, and Hinemoa’s rock.

Under the guidance of dedicated Hindi School teachers, this event promises to be a memorable celebration of culture and camaraderie. The festival, renowned for its joyous spectacle of coloured powder and water, will unfold amidst laughter. Organic and herbal colours will adorn the festivities, ensuring a safe and eco-friendly celebration for all participants.

Beyond the revelry, Children’s Holi serves as an educational journey, inviting attendees to explore the rich tapestry of Holi’s origins and significance. Rooted in ancient tradition, Holi heralds the arrival of spring, symbolizing renewal, abundance, and the unity of communities. It transcends religious boundaries, embodying the spirit of inclusivity and harmony.

Initiated in 2010 by the Hindu Council of New Zealand, the Rotorua Holi Festival has evolved into a cherished tradition, amplifying cultural awareness, and fostering cross-cultural exchanges. Now, the Rotorua Hindi School focuses on educating children about the significance of Holi while fostering friendships and joyous memories. Holi, the second most significant festival in Bharat after Deepawali, holds profound cultural importance, resonating with people worldwide.

About Rotorua Hindi School:

Established in 2021, the Rotorua Hindi School is committed to promoting Hindi language and culture among children and interested learners in the Rotorua community. Through language instruction and cultural activities, the school endeavours to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Bharat’s rich heritage.

Operating from the Hindu Heritage Centre at 225 Malfroy Road, Rotorua, the Rotorua Hindi School offers weekly classes on Saturdays, led by dedicated volunteer teachers. Initially focusing on spoken Hindi, the curriculum will expand to encompass written script and structured syllabi, paving the way for a formalized Hindi education.

In addition to language instruction, the Hindu Heritage Centre serves as a hub for community engagement, offering diverse activities such as yoga, meditation, and dance fitness. These endeavours underscore the centre’s commitment to holistic development and cultural enrichment.
