“For decades altogether, Lutyens’ Delhi became a byword for grandeur. Indians of a certain ilk never stopped lauding the imperial architect’s aesthetic sense. Phrases like “sweeping vistas”, “magnificent cupolas”, “steepling bell towers” entered drawing rooms.
To this breed of Indians, these architectural flourishes were synonymous with audacity, aesthetics, and abundance: the very epitome of civilisation. But which civilisation? Certainly not a Bharatiya civilisation.
For years, the Congress ecosystem effectively normalised the legacy of Edwin Lutyens, a man whose private correspondence contains openly racist views about Indians. This is not an argument against preserving built heritage. It is a question about public veneration, about whether the state should continue to symbolically honour a figure whose own words reflected deep contempt for the very people he built for……”
