The election comes amid profound political transformation, triggered by the massive ‘Gen Z’ protests in September 2025 that forced the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and led to the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister.
For decades, Nepal’s politics has been dominated by veteran leaders whose coalitions often resembled a game of musical chairs. Since the abolition of the monarchy in 2008 and the establishment of a federal democratic republic, the country has witnessed 14 prime ministers in 18 years with figures like Oli, Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda), and Sher Bahadur Deuba repeatedly cycling through power while systemic issues -corruption, nepotism, economic stagnation, and limited opportunities-persisted……”
