BJP’s South Kolkata rally pelted with stones, “Bengal ke gaddaron ko, Goli maro saalon ko” slogans raised

In Kolkata, a road show conducted by BJP was on Monday pelted with stones by miscreants carrying TMC flags, near Rash Behari Avenue – Charu Market area triggering tension in South Kolkata. Some were also heard shouting Go back!” slogans.

The roadshow commenced from Tollygunge Tram Depot and was set to culminate at Rash Behari Avenue, often referred to as the backyard of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The rally was attended by Union Minister Devashree Chaudhari, State BJP Chief Dilip Ghosh and former close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Subhendu Adhikari, who recently switched over to the BJP from the TMC.

According to a police officer, as the rally proceeded towards Charu market, some unidentified miscreants threw bricks and stones at the entourage injuring some of the saffron party activists. Infuriated over the attack, BJP workers chased the miscreants, who by then had fled to nearby bylanes, the officer said. BJP workers then allegedly ransacked a few motorcycles and shops in the area.

A huge police contingent was rushed to the spot to control the incensed activists. Criticising the incident Shubhendu Adhikari said, “Boys from Mini Pakistan and those associated with Kolkata Corporation administrators were throwing stones. It was worth seeing the way our boys chased them away. It reminded us of what Modi ji says –Ghus ke maara (we hit them in their home). Police permission was obtained for this rally but still few persons were seen pelting stones. But these tactics will not work because people of West Bengal are with us and they want a change”.

The state BJP unit called the incident a “blatant attack on democracy”. “Today’s attack has once again proved that democracy has no place in West Bengal. Earlier our Party President (JP Nadda) was attacked. Today again our road show was attacked. This only shows that the TMC has lost the plot ahead of the Assembly polls”, said state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh.

Taking to Twitter, the saffron party said, “Incorrigible TMC goons are showing their true colours by unleashing violence during BJP’s South Kolkata Roadshow! No wonder they are unnerved by the people’s support for BJP! This is a direct and violent attack on democracy!”

BJP national general secretary and West Bengal in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya shared a news clip showing some people marching shouting the incendiary slogan “West Bengal ke gaddaron ko, Goli maro saalon ko” (shoot the traitors of West Bengal).

TMC has been rattled with a series of high-profile defections in recent weeks, and the party is trying to polarise the upcoming elections by whipping up nativist sentiments and projecting BJP as a party of ‘outsiders’.

As the assembly election in West Bengal is nearing and anti-incumbency sentiments grow stronger, political violence in the state is increasing as Mamata Banerjee and her loyalists desperately attempt to cling on to power.
