Students say “India was fastest to evacuate”, TN CM ‘clips’ it to claim he rescued students from Ukraine

In its efforts to make Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin a national figure, and take undue credit DMK is spreading a clipped video of students evacuated from Ukraine thanking the government. While the students said that Bharatiya government was the quickest of all to evacuate their citizens, CM Stalin shared a video clipped to show them as thanking only himself and the TN government.

Students evacuated from the war-torn Ukraine are being welcomed by government representatives and assured of all help. Many who have arrived here after facing a lot of hardships in Ukraine have lauded the efforts of Bharatiya government’s quick response in rescuing them. However DMK, being a party that likes to take credit for others’ work, has done the same with the evacuation operations as well.

On March 3, Hindu Business Line Journalist Parvati Bindu Menon had tweeted that some students needed help reaching the border. It was brought to the attention of DMK MP and CM’s sister Kanimozhi who assured to help. Later the journalist tweeted claiming that TN government arranged transport for the students and paid their fare as well. However TV9’s Aditya Raj Kaul, who has been breaking evacuation related news, revealed that the buses were in fact arranged by Ministry of External Affairs as part of Operation Ganga.

DMK IT wing and party sympathisers have been trying to take credit for this specific incident and spreading canards about the evacuation mission as well. Some even alleged that only North Indian students are being given priority and that Tamil people are left intentionally. CM Stalin even formed a committee of MPs, MLA and IAS officers to travel to Romania, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia to rescue students.

In his letter to the MEA seeking clearance for the same, he wrote “The number of Tamil Nadu students being brought back needs to be increased by focused intervention at the ground level”, literally asking MEA to identify and give priority to Tamils. While it is not wrong to speak for one’s people, asking to ‘increase their numbers’ and reduce others’ reeks of racism.

Even though all he did was write letters to MEA, which is not any less considering the limitations of a state government, he wanted to take credit for evacuating the students and shared a video where a girl can be heard saying “our government did best”. In the unclipped video the girl says, “our Indian government was the fastest to respond and to evacuate”. But the “Indian” part has been clipped and only the part which seemingly praises TN government is shared.

The deviousness of DMK should be understood from how it included the part where a guy says, “Our Hindi friends, North Indian friends said that their governments haven’t done anything. Only our TN and then Kerala governments have made these arrangements”. Denigrating Hindi speaking states is the favourite time-pass of Dravidianists who link anything and everything to Hindi, gau mutra and pani puri to insult the people who live in the state.

DMK took credit for MEA’s work on one hand and insulted Hindi speaking states on the other hand in its attempt to project CM Stalin as a national leader. Rahul Gandhi, while speaking at CM Stalin’s book launch event, had done the same and tried to whip up anti-Bharat sentiments. DMK has been consistently spreading misinformation that centre doesn’t help Tamil Nadu and its people and that it is against their interest. This clipped video is also part of that propaganda to claim that centre does nothing and DMK government goes out of the way to secure the interests of Tamils.
