Muslim Man Arrested after Rape Bid on Hindu Woman: Deganga, WB

A middle-aged Hindu woman was returning home from work, when a local Muslim youth Latif Mondal allegedly dragged her to a bush and tried to rape her. The incident happened in Deganga of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal on 22nd October, Monday.

Hearing the woman’s desperate shouts for help, some local residents who were working in a nearby paddy field rushed to the spot and saved the woman. They also caught Latif and beat him up.

In the meantime, Deganga police reached the spot and arrested the accused. Locals said that two years back, Latif had raped a widow and got arrested and spent two years in jail. But after getting bail, he again did the same crime. They demanded strict police action this time against Latif.

Muslims form 71% of the population of Deganga block in North 24 Parganas as per Census 2011. In Sept 2010, a major pogrom had taken place in Deganga when a Muslim mob allegedly led by local TMC MLA Haji Nurul Islam resorted to arson and violence against the local Hindu community- one Hindu youth was shot dead, hundreds of Hindu shops and houses were looted, women sexually assaulted and temples desecrated.
