The Tamil Nadu “Thowheed Jamaath” (TNTJ) plans to hold a ‘Shirk Abolition’ conference on 31 January in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. In Islamic parlance, Shirk is the prohibited practise of worshipping idols or photos of Gods, Earth (Bhoomidevi), Sun, Moon, Cows, Nature – all of which form part of Hindu Dharma.
“Thowheed Jamaath” is inspired by the Wahhabi and Tablighi schools, and its Founder P. Jainulabudeen was deemed so radical by the Sri Lankan Government that they denied him a visa to attend an Islamic conference last year.
The Arabic word ‘Tawhid’ (also transliterated as Tawheed or Towheed) is the indivisible oneness concept of monotheism in Islam. The first part of the Shahada (the Islamic declaration of faith) is the declaration of belief in the oneness of God. To attribute divinity to a created entity (such as an idol), is known as shirk, and is an unpardonable sin according to Islamists.
Thowheed Jamaath (TNTJ) has been in the news earlier as well –
• They attacked cinema halls over the film Vishwaroopam’s release, which successfully pressurized the Jayalalitha TN Government to ban the film until film-maker Kamal Haasan agreed to make the cuts asked for by the Muslim extremists.
• They were involved in violent ‘protests’ and an attack on the American embassy in Chennai over the banned American movie ‘Innocence of Muslims’; the arterial Mount Road in Chenna was shut and vehicles and policemen targeted. Afternoon namaaz was offered on the main road. The embassy siege lasted four days.
• TNTJ issued pamphlets in Triplicane area with irreverent comments on Saint Ramalinga Vallalar.
• They have also been allegedly involved in attacks on Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
What is the history behind foundation of TNTJ?
This well-researched article on the site vijayvaani.com traces the ancestry of this and other radical Islamist groups which are now functioning with impunity in Tamil Nadu.
“MH Jawahirullah (founder of dreaded terror organization Al Umma) ‘broke away’ from Al Umma to found the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) in 1995. TMMK is projected as an NGO doing social charity and supposedly abjures electoral politics although it describes itself as a mass-based organization. Breaking away from TMMK, P. Jainulabudeen founded Tamil Nadu Towheed Jamaat (TNTJ), also a mass-based organization, and also supposedly not in the electoral arena.
In 2009, MH Jawahirullah formed a political party, the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MNMK), which in alliance with the ruling AIADMK won two of the three assembly seats it contested in 2011. Jayalalithaa’s electoral alliance with MH Jawahirullah’s MNMK, which is the front office for TMMK and TNTJ, has been the single most potent cause for the rising aggression of jihadis in Tamil Nadu’s public life beginning 2011 when the AIADMK dislodged the DMK to form the government in the state. Almost immediately, Jawahirullah used the TMMK and TNTJ to bare his fangs. Jayalalithaa succumbed to the threats of MNMK, TMMK, TNTJ and other extremist outfits on several issues.
Jayalalithaa’s political alliance with the terrorist-turned-politician Jawahirullah emboldened jihadis to unleash two years of relentless jihad against Hindu leaders which last killed Auditor Ramesh in July 2013. Politics of minority-ism of the dangerous kind in Tamil Nadu has been practiced by both the DMK and the AIADMK at least since the 1990s decade. If today Tamil Nadu is sitting on the jihadi tinder box the blame has to be laid squarely and equally at the doors of both Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa.”
Support for global terror organization ISIS (also called IS) has also witnessed a sharp rise in young Muslims of Tamil Nadu, as can be witnessed in this group photo taken by youth wearing ISIS shirts and giving the trademark one-fingered ISIS salute.
