Women and men who had arrived to clean a Hindu crematorium in Luhingkala village in Haryana’s Punhana (Mewat region) on Friday were beaten up by Muslims who had encroached the crematorium land. They were attacked with sticks and axes and three people including a woman were injured in the assault. Based on the complaint of the victims, the police have registered a case against eight people. The accused have been charged for assaulting, snatching money, and hurling caste abuse.
According to available information, out of the nearly five acres of cremation ground, more than 4 acres of land have been occupied by the encroachers who have built houses on the encroached land. In the remaining land, they have stored cow dung cakes and wood.
As per villagers Daulat Ram and Shivlal, on Friday some of their people went to the crematorium to clean the land of weeds and bushes. It was then that Ratti, Irshad, Junna, Junaid, Kamru, Sahab, Asif, Nassi, Asmina, and other encroachers attacked them. Daulat, Rachna, and Pradeep have suffered deep injuries in the attack. The victims, who are from a Scheduled Caste (aka Dalit) community have added that the accused even hurled casteist abuses at them.
Sarpanch Salim and Panchayat Member Kiran Pal informed the media that the encroachers have occupied the land for a long time. In the Panchayat verdict last year, the accused had promised not to occupy the vacant land and not cut the standing crops, but on Friday, they violated the decision of the panchayat and even assaulted the villagers.
Station in-charge Santosh Kumar said that a case has been registered based on the complaint filed by the victims and further investigations in the case are ongoing.
