Cow Smugglers blow off arm of BSF jawan on Bharat-Bangladesh border

A pre-dawn attack on Thursday by Bangladeshi cattle smugglers on a BSF border post in 24 North Parganas district of West Bengal has left a BSF jawan critically wounded, reports

According to BSF sources, a group of 25 cattle smugglers attacked the Angrail border post around 3.30 AM on Thursday. The gang was armed with bombs, sharp-edged weapons, lathis etc. and managed to come around 200 metre inside Bharatiya territory while assaulting the soldiers. It is believed their goal was to smuggle cattle from Bharat with the help of local accomplices.

They lobbed two bombs on the BSF soldiers, one of which landed on the hand of Constable Anisur Rahman, blowing it off and leaving him critically wounded with additional shrapnel wounds on lungs, liver, stomach and legs. Constable Rahman is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

Following this attack, BSF has issued an alert along the whole Bharat-Bangladesh border in southern part of West Bengal. They have also asked the Bangladesh Border Guards to take strict action against cattle smugglers on their side.

On Wednesday, BSF had repulsed an attack by about 200 Bangladeshi cattle smugglers and seized 107 buffaloes along the Indo-Bangla border in Murshidabad district of WB, reports News18.

Cattle smuggling is carried out by an organized mafia, mostly Muslim, in Bharat. Stolen cattle are either supplied to illegal slaughterhouses which mushroom in regions like Western UP, Mewat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh etc., or trafficked across the border into Bangladesh.

Hundreds of thousands of cows are illegally smuggled from Bharat into Bangladesh every year to be slaughtered. Gangs from both sides of the border are involved in this lucrative illegal trade estimated to be worth Rs 5,000 crore a year. Smugglers use horrific torture on the animal – chilli in genitals, pierced with nails – and even employ children.

In recent years, BSF has adopted non-lethal weapons to deal with the smugglers who sometimes include children. But cases such as this attack, and past murders of BSF personnel by cattle smugglers show just how deadly this mafia is, and it can only be dealt with an iron hand. On 14 September 2017, BSF Constable Tushar Kanti Das was killed by cattle smugglers near the same Angrail post in 24 North Parganas, West Bengal. BSF Commandant Dipak Mondal died in similar circumstances on 16 October 2017 in Tripura.

BSF is also cautious in using force against smugglers because many times they have landed in the dock with their superiors and civil administration, and in particular the West Bengal CM has openly sided with Bangladeshi infiltrators .

However, left-liberal intelligentsia in Bharat often portrays this beef mafia as routine ‘cattle traders’ and  rises in protest if any smuggler is killed by villagers in self-defence. They have even made calls to legalize the cross-border smuggling of cows into Bangladesh, with total disregard to legal provisions & socio-cultural, animal rights sensitivities of the people of Bharat.
