BHU withdraws circular banning Holi celebrations on campus after drawing flak on social media

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) had earlier issued a circular banning Holi celebrations on campus sparking outrage on social media. “All the teachers, staff, and students of Kashi Hindu University are hereby informed that all forms of Holi celebrations including playing with colours and playing musical instruments are totally banned inside the campus. Action will be taken against those who don’t obey the order”, the BHU circular said.

The circular further asked department heads to inform the students and take action against them if necessary.

As the circular went viral on social media (SM), BHU drew flak for its Taliban-like diktat in a ‘Hindu majority’ Bharat. SM users were quick to point out that the Vice Chancellor had hosted an Iftar party during Ramzan. They questioned the hypocrisy of the decision to ban Holi celebrations while holding Iftar parties within the University premises.

“The circular dated 28/02/2023 banning Holi celebrations inside the campus is being withdrawn in view of the response it drew on social media and other platforms. It is also hoped that all University members will celebrate this festival of colours in harmony and with dignity”, the revised BHU circular reads.
