Assam Police accused of arresting Hindus peacefully holding a program, after Islamists raised objection

In an alleged display of highhandedness and insensitivity, Assam police arrested a group of Hindus who were conducting a program peacefully. The incident occurred in Lakhimpur and the police allegedly acted at the behest of Islamists who raised objection to the event.

LRO (Legal Rights Observatory), an indigenous legal organization fighting for the rights of indigenous people, highlighted that Lakhimpur police official Anand Mishra, who arrested Hindus, is infamous for arranging a paid crowd to flaunt his popularity.

In the video, he is clearly seen arguing and subsequently threatening Hindus. The arrested have been identified as Majuli Sattradhikar and other Hindu Juba Chhatra Parishad activists. It is not known at this point what the program being organized was about. LRO has asked CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to take cognizance of the highhandedness of Mishra and his team and take appropriate action against the erring officials.

It is hoped that the CM would step in and ensure justice is delivered to Hindus who were holding the program peacefully and legally.
