A 13-year-old girl who was working in the fields with her grandmother was dragged away and gang-raped on Saturday by 4 Muslim youths from a neighbouring village in Garhmukteshwar tehsil, Hapur district, UP.
All 4 accused – Rehan, Tasleem, Danish, Abdul – were arrested by Sunday afternoon. The girl belonged to a Scheduled Caste (SC) community and police is providing protection to her and her family. The survivor’s medical report has confirmed rape.
The area is tense after the gang-rape. Senior officials like ADM and SSP visited the victim family on Sunday night and assured speedy justice. SSP Sarvesh Kumar Mishra said that primary medical report has confirmed rape, and the accused have also confessed to their crime. “A chargesheet will be filed very soon, and the victim will get justice. Her family will also get financial and other assistance as per government provisions,” he added.
This case has chilling similarity to another case from last year where another minor Hindu SC girl was gang-raped by 3 Muslims in UP’s Kaushambi district when she had gone to cut grass near a Eidgah ground.
However, such cases usually sink without a trace as they are deemed ‘communally sensitive’ (i.e. they involve a Muslim perpetrator) by mainstream English-language media. However, any case which offers a chance to project ‘upper caste’ Hindus as oppressors is lustily covered, as we saw with the tragic Hathras case in which fact and fiction got intertwined after the entire Lutyens’ media and political class descended and camped on the spot for days.
But for this Hindu SC family from Hapur, a place which is even closer to Delhi than Hathras, there will be no TV vans and hordes of journalists and politicians coming to express their sympathies. Just like the scores of other Hindu girls and women in Western UP who are targeted by Islamists, this family too is just grist for the secular mill.
