A 32-year-old Islamist grocery store owner from Karnataka has been detained on suspicion of murdering one of his workers. The incident occurred at Mulihithlu on the outskirts of Mangaluru in Karnataka. The perpetrator, Tausif Hussain, set the victim, Gajnana, on fire and attempted to pass it off as an electrocution.
After questioning locals in the area and acting on evidence, Mangaluru South police detained Hussain on Saturday, according to municipal police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain. Gajnana was allegedly set on fire and killed by the suspect over a small disagreement, according to the police. The incident happened on a Saturday morning in the store’s godown, where Hussain and Gajnana were engaged in a heated conversation. Around 8.30 am, Hussain allegedly beat one of his victim with a bottle before setting him aflame. He put out the fire after that and kept Gajnana in the godown until 1.30 pm.
Hussain gave the false impression that Gajnana had been electrocuted and transferred to a hospital for treatment, where the doctors declared him dead. Hussain thought he could conceal the crime from the locals and the authorities. Doctors and police launched an investigation after determining from the severity of the burn injuries that electrocution was not the cause.
Police verified the incident was a homicide after conducting a preliminary investigation, and the suspect was taken into custody. According to the police, a case has been filed, and more investigation is ongoing.
