CPM-DYFI activists murder yet another RSS-Yuva Morcha leader Arun Kumar in Kerala, police blame ‘petty rivalry’

CPM-DYFI activists have murdered yet another RSS-Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader in Kerala. Tharoor panchayat Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha secretary Arun Kumar who was stabbed on Sivarathri by CPM workers succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Of the seven accused, six have been arrested so far and all the accused are Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) workers.

Trouble began when the procession from the Pazhambalacode Mariamman temple was on its way to the Gayathri river for Khumba immersion. Police intervened and resolved the issue but the communist cadre went away and regrouped with weapons. They beat up devotees and when Arun intervened, they stabbed him on his left chest, puncturing his heart. The wound cut off blood supply to Arun’s brain.

Severely injured Arun was taken to a private hospital in Alathur but was later shifted to another hospital in Nenmara. He was operated upon but his condition remained unchanged. In the end, the brave young man breathed his last. Arun Kumar was just 28.

Police had arrested CPM activist Vadakkepavadi Manikandan (56) and his son Krishnadas (23) earlier. Ramesh (23), Nithin (22), Jayesh (21) and Santosh (21) were also later detained for their role in the cold-blooded murder. Police said that Vadakkepavadi DYFI (CPM youth wing) unit secretary Mithun, the first accused in the case, is absconding.

Police chief R Viswanath rejected allegations that Arun was a victim of political rivalry and claimed that there was ‘no politics’ involved in the attack. Officers asserted that it was just a ‘petty rivalry’ between two local groups in connection with the temple festivities. Police rationale that it cannot be a political murder since an accused in the murder is a relative of Arun is bizarre, to say the least.

Arun had quite an influence in the area and under his leadership, many local youths had joined the RSS. During the last panchayat elections, BJP lost by just one vote to the CPM in Tharoor. Since then BJP workers and their families are facing constant threats and oppression.

Arun was attacked by a group of criminals during last year’s Vishu celebrations also. Last month, following the brutal rape of a mentally and physically challenged minor in front of her bed-ridden mother at Malappuram, Arun had organized a protest. It is said that the local CPM goondas were waiting for a chance to exact revenge and they have succeeded.

Meanwhile, the BJP contended that CPM and DYFI activists are behind Arun’s brutal murder. BJYM general secretary Praful Krishna alleged that Arun was murdered at the behest of former CPM minister AK Balan. Though they handed over the details of the murderers to the police, authorities delayed the arrest of five suspects.

A post-mortem of the body was conducted and it was handed over to central minister V Muraleedharan. Arun’s body was kept for public viewing and hundreds paid tribute following which he was cremated. BJP observed a hartal in Alathur taluk on Saturday and the situation all over Palakkad and Thrissur districts remains tense.

RSS Worker Sanjith Murdered in Palakkad

A shoddy performance from the local authorities saw the murderers of RSS worker Sanjith ‘abscond’ for several weeks. The political murder occurred in November last year and led to court intervention in January, this year. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers were entrusted with the case.

That political killing was at the hands of the alleged communist B-team in Kerala, the Popular Front of India. Back then, the Kerala government vehemently opposed the CBI by dishonestly informing the court that the investigation is almost over. An accused in that case is yet to be arrested. Sanjith too had been attacked before, he too was from Palakkad and he too was killed using sharp weapons.

Sanjith murder case was transferred to the CBI since there were inter-state criminals involved. Since all the accused in the Arun case are locals, this case might end up like most of the political murder cases that the communists have been involved in. Since the police are parroting their political masters, Arun’s impoverished family might be denied justice.

As far as the CPM political murders are concerned, they have a pattern that revolves around local temple festivals. They peak around the January to April period and any lack of vigilance at the hands of the police usually results in the deaths of political opponents. These are dangerous times for Hindus living in Kerala, exactly what Yogi Adityanath had cautioned his voters in UP.
