This Tuesday, a Kozhikode native stabbed a 17-year-old girl in revenge for withdrawing from his marriage proposal. The Taliban model attack took place this afternoon at Kallachi, Kozhikode. Arshad, a native of Nadapuram (in the same district), stabbed the girl returning home from a private college. The young girl was punched and stabbed twice in the shoulder.
Shockingly, the victim, a resident of Teruvamparambu in Kallachi, was attacked in broad daylight in full public view. Arshad (28), who worked in Qatar, returned six months ago. A local media reported they were in love earlier and decided to marry. Eight months ago, the marriage was arranged between Arshad and the girl.
Later, the girl withdrew from the wedding due to a disagreement. The girl’s father said that Arshad used to threaten her over the phone. The girl’s family had shifted residences due to Arshad’s threats.
The victim was returning home from college during the afternoon rush hour. Arshad, who had arrived on a motorcycle, stopped the student on the Kallachi Market Road. CCTV footage from a nearby shop showed the assailant following the girl, punching thrice and stabbing her with a knife.
In the footage, the girl can be seen running to escape after realizing that Arshad had come to attack her. The girl escaped with only injuries as she ran to a nearby shop. The police said that the reason for the violence was resentment of rejection.
Though Arshad tried to escape the crime scene, locals and traders who heard the girl’s screams subdued the accused and handed him to the police. Nadapuram police reached the spot and checked the CCTV footage. The police registered a case of attempted murder against Arshad. The girl has four stitches on her hand and is undergoing treatment at Nadapuram Taluk Hospital.
Several towns in Kozhikode district, like Nadapuram and nearby Kuttiadi, are now allegedly inhabited by radical Islamists who do not treat ladies properly. Experts opined that underage marriage is also rampant in these societies.
