JNU establishes new centres for Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain Studies

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has launched three new centres dedicated to advancing the vision of Vikasit Bharat by integrating Indian knowledge systems. These centres, focusing on Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain studies, will now be part of JNU’s School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies.

Announcing the initiative, a social media post on X highlighted, “This will take us on the path of integrating tradition with modernity, continuity with change, realm with region, and myth with reality.”

JNU’s Executive Council approved the establishment of these centres during a meeting on May 29. A committee was formed to explore and recommend the implementation of the National Education Policy (2020) and the Indian Knowledge System within the university.

“The Executive Council, in its meeting held on 29.05.2024, has approved the recommendation of the committee constituted to explore and recommend NEP-2020 and Indian Knowledge System and its further implementation in the University, and establishing of following centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies,” read a notification dated July 9.

Last year, Delhi University (DU) also established a Centre for Hindu Studies, which currently offers a master’s degree and plans to introduce undergraduate courses. Additionally, DU has a department for Buddhist Studies, and in March, it received government approval to establish a Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhism with an estimated budget of Rs 35 crore.
