Neo-Ambedkarite HOD of BHU Journalism department threatening students with SC-ST Act?

The HoD (Head of Department) of BHU’s Journalism and Communication is threatening Banaras Hindu University’s (BHU) Journalism department students with the SC-ST Act. As per reports, students are protesting against the HoD Dr Shobna Narlikar for the last 6 to 7 days demanding that Narlikar be sacked.

Students oppose Hod Shobna Narlikar

The students have accused Narlikar of misbehaving with students and abusing them, and when they oppose her, she threatened to file false cases of sexual harassment and also get them booked under the SC-ST Act. They further said that owing to Professor Narlikar’s dictatorial behaviour they were not able to concentrate on their studies. The students alleged that whenever they approach the HoD with their problems, she only abuses them and tells them she would destroy their careers.

The protesting students have written to the BHU Dean apprising him of Narlikar’s dictatorial behaviour and abusive nature. They have asked the Dean to dismiss the HoD and send her for counselling. The letter highlights that the future of the students remains uncertain and unsafe till such time that Narlikar heads the department while adding it would impossible for them to concentrate on their studies.

Narlikar had made false charges a decade ago too

Dr Shobna Narlikar had falsely accused then-head professor Shishir Basu. On 16 March 2013, she wrote a letter to the University’s Proctorial board in which she alleged that the students were passing casteist remarks against her due to Basu’s provocation. She further accused them of harassing her by clicking her obscene pictures. She threatened to undertake a fast unto death if immediate legal action was not taken against Professor Basu.

Following this, the University’s Proctorial board forwarded the then-Assistant Professor Narlikar’s complaint to Lanka Police Station. A case was registered against Shishir Basu in the Lanka Police Station. Varanasi Court Special Judge (SC ST Act) Sanjeev Kumar Sinha heard the case.

After hearing all the arguments and going through the documents, Judge Sinha in his verdict noted that Narlikar had filed the complaint owing to academic grudges and similar accusations were levelled by her against other faculty members too. Professor Shishir Basu was absolved of all charges after nine long years.
