1000 Private Madrasas to be closed soon, said Himanta Biswa Sarma

Very soon, almost 1000 privately run Madrasas will be closed and those Madrasas will be converted into general schools, said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. He also said that his government is in talk with private parties on this issue.

While addressing a meet on the 1st of January, Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that his government wants to convert those Madrasas into general schools.

Himanta said, “Private Madrasas are protected by the constitution of India. The government can’t touch minority-run educational institutions. They don’t even fall under the RTE Act. But having said that, the Assam Police and the education department are working together; so we can reduce at least 1000 private madrasas. We are negotiating with the management bodies of the private madrasas.”

He also indicated that his government will take special arrangements for the indigenous Assamese Muslims. He said that his government will complete a fresh census of Assamese Muslims by the end of this year.

Notably, earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam Government has shut down all government-run Madrasas in the state and converted them to general schools. Now, the government is eyeing to the private-run Madrasas.
