When Indian Islamists incited religious slurs against Pakistani Hindu cricketer Danish Kaneria over his Eid greeting

How a simple Eid greeting by Danish Kaneria on April 22nd has sparked outrage and led to racial and religious slurs against him, as well as against Hindus and Indians.

Indian Muslim handles have taken Kaneria’s greeting as a personal affront and have called for his punishment. Some social media posts have even gone so far as to incite violence against Kaneria.

It’s worth noting that some handles, such as Ali Sohrab & Meer Faisal, were instrumental in making Kaneria’s post go viral & fueled outrage over it. Sohrab also tagged the police in his post, which could be seen as indirectly encouraging a Muslim mob to go after Kaneria.

Kaneria’s tweet included Jai Shree Ram. Sociologist Jan Breman states that it was used as “a greeting of welcome in the countryside since time immemorial”. This phrase has a cultural significance for many Hindus and is not necessarily a religious or political statement.

For two days, there was no outrage or controversy over Kaneria’s post. However, on April 24th, some Indian Muslim handles with a significant following began to tweet against it, tagging Pakistani Police accounts.

This led to a flurry of tweets, with both Pakis & Indian Muslims making religious slurs against Kaneria, as well as against Hindus & Indians in general. These reactions are not only alarming but also demonstrate a complete disregard for free speech and religious tolerance.

Kaneria’s Eid greeting, which included a phrase that has cultural significance for many Hindus, has been misconstrued as blasphemy or an insult to any particular religion specifically by Indian Muslim Cheerleaders.
