Interstate Christian religious conversion syndicate busted in Lucknow; Pastor couple among seven arrested: UP

In a major crackdown on illegal Christian religious conversion activities, Uttar Pradesh Police have busted an interstate Christian conversion syndicate operating from Lucknow’s Mohanlalganj area, arresting seven accused, including the kingpin, Pastor Daniel, and his wife. Police claim the network had links extending from Tamil Nadu to several districts of Uttar Pradesh and was systematically targeting rural communities through inducements and organized prayer meetings.

As per the Aaj Tak reports, according to investigators, the mastermind, identified as Daniel (formerly known as Bala Subramaniyam), is a native of Tamil Nadu who reportedly converted to Christianity after marrying a Christian woman, Subala. During interrogation, police stated that the couple was sent to Lucknow in 1998 by a church organization and that Daniel was appointed as a pastor responsible for expanding religious outreach across the Varanasi region. Police further stated that the network operated under annual conversion targets and received financial support based on the number of conversions carried out. Authorities are examining these claims as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to the police statements, the syndicate targeted economically vulnerable villagers, promising miraculous healing of chronic illnesses, financial assistance, marriage arrangements, and even childbirth before inviting them to prayer meetings where they were pressured to convert. The investigation gained momentum after a resident of Bharsawa village opposed the conversion activities and complained that he was threatened when he refused to convert. Following the complaint, villagers detained the suspects after they arrived in a Bolero vehicle and handed them over to the police.

During searches, investigators recovered religious literature, conversion booklets, bank statements, a Bolero vehicle, and a diary that police describe as a key piece of evidence. According to investigators, the diary contained records of families receiving financial assistance, names of individuals targeted for conversion, and details of inducements offered under the guise of medical treatment and welfare support. Police have arrested seven accused, including the pastor, his wife, and five associates, and are now scrutinizing bank transactions and expanding the investigation into possible links across Varanasi, Sultanpur, and other districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The case has also raised questions about the funding source for the conversion network. Since foreign contributions to eligible organizations in Bharat are regulated under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), investigators are expected to examine whether funds were received in compliance with the law and whether any illegal financial transactions occurred. Police are scrutinizing bank statements and financial records to determine if the network received funding through unlawful channels or other undisclosed sources. The financial trail could become a crucial aspect of the investigation as authorities seek to establish the scale and operation of the conversion syndicate.

The FCRA is expected to significantly reduce foreign funding channeled through overseas Christian missionary organizations to illegal religious conversion syndicates operating in Bharat.
