Hindu groups demand a ban on the Christian-led ‘Samadhana Mahotsava’ amid allegations of conversion tactics: Udupi, KA

Udupi has witnessed rising tensions ahead of the proposed Christian missionary-led Samadhana Mahotsava scheduled from March 20 to 22, with several Hindu organizations strongly opposing the program. The event, reportedly to be held at the Mission Compound and led by Tamil Nadu-based Christian preacher Mohan C. Lazarus, has triggered widespread concern even before its commencement.

Allegations of conversion through inducement

Protesting Hindu groups have alleged that such gatherings may go beyond religious preaching and could involve indirect methods aimed at influencing vulnerable sections of society. According to them, similar events elsewhere have reportedly used emotional appeals, claims of miraculous healing, and promises of personal or financial relief to attract attendees, raising fears of potential religious conversion through inducement.

As per VSK Telangana reports, organizations, including Hindu Jagarana Vedike, have submitted memorandums to the district administration, urging officials to deny permission for the event. Local leaders have called for strict scrutiny, arguing that such programs must be carefully examined to ensure they do not violate laws against unlawful religious conversions.

Concerns over organisation and funding

Further concerns have been raised about the organization linked to the preacher, Jesus Redeems Ministry, which has previously faced scrutiny over alleged regulatory issues, including foreign funding. Hindu organizations believe that such factors add to the need for caution, especially in sensitive regions.

Religious sensitivity and law & order concerns

Udupi, known for its deep cultural and religious significance, has seen heightened reactions from local groups who fear that such events could disturb communal harmony. Hindu organisations have warned of large-scale protests if permission is granted, stating that any activity perceived as targeting local beliefs will be strongly opposed.

The district administration has acknowledged receiving multiple complaints and is currently reviewing the matter. Officials are expected to assess legal provisions, law-and-order implications, and available evidence before making a decision.

Udupi is a renowned temple town, home to the sacred Sri Krishna Temple, and it holds immense religious and cultural significance. In such a sensitive and spiritually important place, any form of Christian religious preaching that involves questionable practices like so-called faith healing or emotional inducement can disturb social harmony. Such activities by the Christian missionaries may influence people’s mindsets and exploit emotional situations, raising serious concerns.

Allowing individuals or organizations that have faced past allegations of conversions to conduct such programs in a culturally sensitive coastal region like Udupi could lead to unrest and disturb the peaceful environment of the temple town. The district administration must act responsibly and ensure that no activity is permitted that could potentially disrupt communal harmony or take advantage of people under the guise of religious gatherings.
