Police complaint against Punjabi singer Gurman Maan for insulting Shanidev: Ludhiana

Hindu organizations filed a complaint against Punjabi singer Gurman Maan for insulting Shanidev in his latest song. They also accused the police of mistreating them when they went to register their complaint, a charge vehemently denied by the police.

Gurman Maan’s song ‘Convo’ insults Shani Bhagwan

According to reports, Gurman Maan’s latest song ‘convo’ uses abusive language for Shanidev. Hindu organizations held protests across Ludhiana demanding the registration of an FIR (First Information Report) against Maan. They also questioned why Punjabi singers repeatedly abused Hindu Devis and Devatas. Dharnas were held against the singer over the weekend (23 and 24 December) in Ludhiana. One of the protesting youths, identified as Sri Hindu Takht’s Manish, also threatened to immolate himself if the authorities failed to take action.

In the song, released in mid-December, the singer tells his lover they needn’t bother matching their horoscopes (Kundalis) because he (Maan) keeps Shani Bhagwan below his feet. Hindus took offence to this line and took to the streets against the singer.

Hindu organizations want an FIR against the singer

Hindu Takht’s Rishabh Kanojia was present during the protests. He said he has been protesting against the singer since the video’s release. He further accused the police of not acting despite the protests. He said that the police had not even called Maan for questioning despite the widespread protests. According to Rishabh, Maan had resorted to abusing Shanidev for quick fame, which has become the norm among singers and other entertainers. He said the singer had deliberately hurt Hindu sentiments.

On Saturday (December 23), officials and members of Tajpur Road’s Sri Icchhapurn Shanidev Mandir protested outside the police station. During the protests, they also raised slogans against Maan. The protestors added that the police misbehaved with them and pushed them out when they had gone inside the station to file their complaint. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jatinder Goriyan said that Maan chose the wrong path to gain publicity for his song. He added that they were forced to protest outside the police station because of the police’s misbehaviour. Additionally, the protestors also recited Hanuman Chalisa. Hindus have questioned why Punjabi singers only disrespect Hindu Devis and Devatas.

On the other hand, Sukhdev Singh Barad, SHO (Station House Officer) of Division Seven Police Station, denied accusations of mistreating the protestors. They also said they would act only after conducting an inquiry into the matter. Ludhiana ACP Sukhnaj Singh said the protests were undertaken peacefully, adding that strict action would be taken against anyone who breaks the law. Furthermore, the complaint against Maan has been forwarded to ACP North for further action.
