Periyarist selling puja items arrested for placing deity’s picture on a chappal

A follower of Periyar EV.Ramasamy has been arrested for hurting religious sentiments by placing a Hindu deity’s photo on a chappal. Bhoopati, a Periyarist who runs a shop near a temple in Kanchipuram was arrested after Hindu Munnani filed a complaint against him for hurting Hindus’ religious sentiments.

The DMK government had earlier banned public darshan in temples across Tamil Nadu. Now, public celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi has also been banned and only worship in houses is allowed. Hindu Munnani had planned protests across the state against this move. As a part of this, the Kanchipuram Hindu Munnani cadre protested in front of the Ganesha temple in Vishnu Kanchi.

While there they noticed the picture of Athi Varadar(Vishnu) placed on a chappal in front of a shop that sells puja items. When they confronted the shop owner, Bhoopati, a Periyarist, he allegedly said, “I will do whatever I like. I am a follower of Dravidar Kazhagam. It is our (government’s) rule”. Following this an altercation ensued as Bhoopati refused to remove the picture and argued arrogantly.

Later Hindu Munnani lodged a complaint and police arrested Bhoopati. It is alleged that Bhoopati has encroached government land to run his shop. Hindu Munnani cadre claim that they had complained to the corporation officials about the encroachment a few years ago but no action was taken. Hindu organisation in TN have been protesting against letting non-Hindus and Periyarists rent/lease temple properties. This incident has proved them right. Such incidents are expected to rise as Periyarists are emboldened with DMK in power.
