Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.
In this weekly summary for the period from 30 March to 05 April 2025, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:
Bharat
1) Islamists targeted Hindu farmers in Jhaubona village under the jurisdiction of Nawda Police Station by setting ablaze the betel leaves plantations belonging to the latter.
2) Islamists entered a Puja mandap and stabbed several devotees. At least 10 devotees were injured in the attack. The incident occurred where devotees were gathered in the Mandap on the occasion of the Shitala Mata Puja in Barbaria village under Bhagawanpur-2 block of West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district.
3) Two Hindu youths were beaten up outside a mosque in Mumbai’s Malad. The duo were returning after attending the Gudi Padwa Kalash Yatra when they were assaulted for carrying the Kalash and Bhagwa (saffron) flag by the mob. The incident occurred in Malad’s Pathanwadi when the youths were travelling in a rickshaw.
4) Karnataka police have registered an FIR against SDPI leader Abdul Ghaffoor Kurahatti after Hindu organizations lodged a complaint against SDPI activists for displaying an inflammatory placard against the Sangh Parivar during Ramzan prayers in Hubballi.
5) Once again, the so-called “brotherhood” narrative has collapsed under the weight of betrayal. In a deeply shocking incident that unfolded on Eid (March 31, 2025) in Assam’s Hojai district, a radical Islamist, Nazbul Alam, desecrated and vandalized the sacred Kali Mata Murti inside a crematorium.
6) Jasim Uddin Laskar and Abu Salam reportedly sexually assaulted a Hindu girl in a bus. After the crime, the Islamists allegedly threw the victim on the road. Later, locals recovered the victim and admitted her to a hospital. The incident occurred in Assam’s Sribhumi district.
7) In a heartbreaking incident, 2.5-year-old Harshika Sharma was murdered by her neighbour, Mohammed Ansari (25), in Taloja, Navi Mumbai. Ansari lived with his wife and 3 sons – aged 5, 3, 2 – in the opposite flat to Amrish Sharma, his wife, Harshika and her elder brother (8) in Mauli Krupa building.
8) Four Islamist men lured a Hindu woman under the pretence of offering her a job, only to drag her into a forest and gang-rape her. This horrifying crime took place in the Sardhana region of Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Meerut, where villagers and the police caught the accused red-handed. The accused were identified as Saddam, Mushahid, Sartaj, and Maroof, had plotted the crime in advance. Sartaj trapped the victim by promising her a job, knowing that she was struggling financially while her husband was in jail. The woman, desperate for help, unknowingly walked into a horrific trap set by these radical elements.
9) As the West Bengal Police have cancelled the leaves of all police personnel ahead of Ram Navami celebrations to step up the security arrangements, the BJP leader and former national vice-president of the party, Dilip Ghosh, has accused the West Bengal Police of creating unnecessary panic among common people before the Hindu festival.
10) In a deeply disturbing and shocking incident, a 19-year-old Hindu girl from Bihar was brutally raped in Bengaluru’s KR Puram. The young woman, who had been working in Kerala, was returning home after quitting her job and had reached Bengaluru with her cousin to catch a train to Bihar. The accused were identified as Asif and Syed Mushar.
11) In a harrowing example of religious extremism overriding basic humanity, a group of Namaz-offering Muslims in Meerut brazenly blocked a public road for Friday prayers, refusing to let an ambulance carrying a critically injured Hindu accident victim pass through.
12) A fresh controversy has erupted at Jadavpur University after the administration refused permission for Ram Navami celebrations on campus, citing the absence of a Vice-Chancellor. The decision has sparked massive outrage among Hindu student groups, who question why an Iftar celebration was allowed on the same premises just days ago.
13) A 50-year-old man, Haris Uddin, has been arrested by Nilambazar Police following allegations of attempted sexual assault against a minor Hindu girl in Assam’s Dasgram area of Sribhumi district.
Bangladesh
Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.
1) A Muslim mob laid siege to the house of Shankar Saha and carried out violence and vandalism under the pretext of ‘blasphemy’. The incident occurred in Sakhipur Upazila in Tangail district. The Muslims claimed that the Hindu man posted ‘offensive content’ on Facebook and used it as an excuse to vandalise Saha’s house. Besides breaking his furniture and ransacking his house, the extremists also set fire to a photo of Devi Lakshmi and carried out desecration of the Hindu deity.
2) Durga Mandir was gutted in a terrible fire in Dinajpur city. The cotton pile kept inside the Mandir was completely burnt in the fire, the reports added. After learning of the incident, six units of the fire service arrived at the scene and were able to bring the fire under control after about an hour of effort.
Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.
