Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.
In this weekly summary for the period from 09 February to 15 February 2025, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:
Bharat
1) Madurai’s Dandayuthapani Swami Temple administration under the Tamil Nadu HR & CE Department, issued a circular prohibiting priests from accepting offerings placed by devotees on their plates. The order also entrusted the temple bellmen with depositing these offerings into the temple treasury.
2) A controversy has erupted over an alleged case of love jihad after a widowed mother discovered through social media that her daughter had married an Islamist man. The woman, a resident of Pauri Garhwal, has accused the youth of trapping her daughter through deceit and coercion.
3) In the Chota Bharwara of Gomti Nagar Extension area in Lucknow, a massive uproar has erupted over alleged Christian conversion activities going on in a house. The local Hindus staged a protest, accusing the Christian residents of the said house of holding Sunday prayer meetings and converting locals to Christianity. It has been alleged that the accused are pressuring local Hindus to convert to Christianity or sell their houses and leave the area.
4) Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has yet again found itself at the centre of controversy, this time over an alleged menu change replacing Chicken Biryani with Beef Biryani at a university hostel mess. The incident has led to a massive backlash, prompting swift police action as the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government registered an FIR against three individuals involved.
5) A violent Islamic mob launched an attack on the Udayagiri Police Station in Mysuru, Karnataka, injuring at least 14 police personnel, including two inspectors. As per Kannada Prabha, the attack, triggered by a WhatsApp status posted by a Hindu youth, Suresh, once again highlights the growing trend of Islamic violence and mob justice in Karnataka.
6) Bikash Barman (49) was lynched to death in the Baliya village under the jurisdiction of the Bhatol Police Outpost of Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal. The Police immediately launched an investigation and arrested two accused Nawab Sirajdoula (28) and Jalal Muhammad (29).
7) A Hindu family in Assam’s Morigaon District was attacked by Islamists after a scuffle broke out between one of the male family members and a Muslim man. The members of the family were beaten and stabbed with sharp weapons. Based on the complaint, the Police arrested ten accused Islamists so far.
8) The Bhadohi district police (Uttar Pradesh) rescued a 15-year-old girl who was kidnapped after conducting a raid in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district and arrested a man for allegedly abducting and raping her. Police said that on January 8, a woman resident of a locality in the Surayawa police station area of the district had lodged an FIR against Samjad alias Sanjay Bangali (25) regarding the kidnapping of her daughter.
9) In yet another shocking case, a Hindu woman, Lakshmi Devi (26), lost her life under suspicious circumstances in Sugiya village, Rudhauli police station area. Lakshmi, who was pregnant with her third child, was found dead last Friday. Her husband, Mohammed Islam, hurriedly buried her without informing her family, raising grave suspicions. On Thursday, authorities exhumed her body for a postmortem following police intervention.
10) Sonbhadra police arrested two women for assisting their brother in the kidnapping of a girl, forcing her to convert to Islam and sexually harassing her. The main accused man and his mother had already been nabbed by the police, but these sisters were absconding. Husneara (30) and Jahanara (27) of the Kalkali Bahra area, were arrested and sent to jail after being produced before the court. The main accused, their brother, and their parents were already arrested.
Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.
